Everyone needs a Leko...

Just scored a nice deal - Pyramid has used Colortan 1K Leko's for $45.

(A Leko is a brand name - that's become a generic term - for an ellipsoidal spot light).

An ellipsoidal has lenses that focus the beam - optically similar to a slide projector. They also have sliding shutters so you can make rectangles or squares of light. You can focus 'em very hard, or somewhat soft. They also have a slot to put a metal mask in, like a cucoloris, etc.

They are great for:

Simulating a follow spot for music vids...
When you need a hard "shaft" of light to show dust or smoke (and cutting some slots in sheet metal or flashing will give you "fingers" or beams).

PF has them with a used 1k FEL lamp (they will take similar-based 500's and 750's as well. These suckers are BRIGHT with optics and the 1K bulb.) They include a pipe clamp, and will throw in a TVMP (baby stand adapter) for $16 - yeah, you can get those for $11 or $12, I went ahead and got one to save the hassle & shipping of getting one elsewhere. Shipping to me was $18, for a grand total of under $80.

FYI, new FEL's can be found for $12-$15.

Haven't gotten it yet, but every time I deal with Pyramid, they're great.

They have them on their site and Ebay in PAIRS - call DAVE if you just want one. (I couldn't see needing two, and they're big - a single saved a bundle on shipping).

Info on the doubles is at http://pyramid-films.com/. No, I don't work for 'em, they're not my friends or family - but man, I have scored some nice light stands from them - got a pair of 12' beefy babies for like $150. NIce guys, too.

Hope that helps someone out.

The most useful thing a leko does IMO is carry a gobo pattern. I have some Altmans if anybody needs some.

Ellipsoidals are a fantastic tool to have in your kit. Having a 3-ton truck to keep it all in would be even better! ETC Source4 makes very sexy ones if you can source them.

I keep two Source4 on my five ton. I use them way more than I thought I would. So much more versatile than a cuculoris. I keep dozens of patterns for them.

I got one for hard-beam looks, but I see Roscoe makes holders & gobos for the Colortran... think I'll check that out. My big foamcore cookies don't have much travel life...

I like to put bounce boards far into the set and hit leko's into it. It's great because you can make it hit just the bounce board and shape it off of everything else.

Apart from cinema and video I also work in theater lighting and man I love souce fours! last week I did the lighting for a theater play and I used 9 of them only to make a light corridor, the clearly focused shape is invaluable and makes wonders. Great light I would love to have one in my kit!
