really good... loved the lighting and cinematography... its nice to see a serious entry... most other are comedy, and thats because comedies are easy to do. really good acting, however the ending seemed a little weird to me... idk i just didnt really get the end message.

good job tho

If you want my honest opinion, here it is:

I liked the cold open, it worked well. The long lens stuff looked really nice. The staging of the shot where he sees the girl is a good example of "cutting-in-camera" (even though that's not really the right term). The RED/GREEN lighting was a nice touch, was that practical lighting or did you have to bring it in yourself? Pretty good sound design and music as well. Good wrap up, with the girl coming back into the story at the end. I also think it was pretty gutsy to shoot this movie at night, considering the time crunch of the fest.

The things I didn't really like so much were the traveling tracking shots when the guy is walking down the street. It just seemed a little at odds with the shooting style up to that point. Also, the wide locked-down shot (starts at 1:00) didn't really do anything for me. I think if the character had been visible easier, maybe it would have worked better. But, even still, in a festival with only 3 minutes to tell your story, I don't think you have the luxury of showing a character walking down the street for 30 seconds with little else happening. Also, when he hits the bum, it doesn't really feel justified. Clearly, I know the attack is not meant to be justified, but I didn't really sense the conflict prior to it. Perhaps if the bum had at least instigated the guy a little.

I don't know how I feel about the voice-over. It definitley served to explain a little of the story, but I think (like a lot of other VO movies) it would work just fine without it.

All in all, I think you did a fine job of creating an entire movie, regardless of the time frame you had to do it in. I'll be sure to keep an eye out for it when voting time comes around. (I have an entry in as well however, so If I only get one vote... ;) )

The lighting we brought in ourselves with two Arri 650k's and obviously some gels to manipulate the look. We were shooting for a streetlight that progressed in it's alters between lights as it got closer and closer to him punching. It turns out though when we edited it that the majority of it stayed on red.

We had two editors, one who structured the shots and one who finalized all the shots and sound (that one was me). The reason we had such long tracking shots was because he was saying something in those areas, but we ended up cutting the lines and keeping them anyways to kind of show him moping (and we had time).

There was actually supposed to be a line when he gets right off the train talking about how he is too routine; wearing the same suit and riding the same train every day. That is why when he comes into contact with the bum he's talking about having given him nearly $100 by now. In a way, his justification for punching the dude was because he finds all of his money was spent on booze, and since he is ashamed with the way he is handling life, he takes the anger out on the only guy he talks to really ever.

That is what we were shooting for, but like you said, we risked it with the night shoots and there were a few things that got left out. We actually ended up getting this in with 10 minutes left in the festival.

Thank you a lot though for the honest opinion, I really appreciate it and am glad to know you liked it. I'd like to see your movie as well if you have it online anywhere at the moment.
