Event Work - Tips, Tricks, Headaches...

I am currently writing up a set of guidelines for a company I freelance for doing weddings, and Bar and Bat Mitzvahs.

They have more shooters using the DVX, but not very well. Not matching scene files, white balance, one uses 60i, others 30p. Both on same shoot.

Some of their mistakes can be a real nightmare for me while editing, trying to colour correct to match footage.

So I thought, besides the problems and answers I've come up with using my DVX, it would be a good idea to get all of you who do event work also, to share your thoughts on the matter.

Please contribute anything relevant. Scene files that you think work best, as some of these parties get really dark, and as much as I love my DVX, not so great with the low light.

So, bring your nightmares, answers, settings, grabs and footage of every direction.

=================================================

So here's what I've been working at.

30P - at most weddings that I freelance. 24P for my own shoots. scene settings below are in my 30P file, might be a little different in 24P file

Master Pedal about +2 or +3.

Crushing blacks in camera can be a nightmare when recptions get real dark. Plus can cause a real problem if any guests have darker skin colour. The company I work for also provides bands, and the one that I tend to be with has three black singers. Two of which are very dark. And when the entertainment package doesn't includea stage lighting kit, this can be a real problem because on camera lights only reach so far.

Saturation -3 about. it seems darker parties create more saturation in skin tones, especially when you don't have your light close enough to the subject.

Gamma - Black Press

Matrix - Cinelike

Shutter Speed - I try for 1/48th, most of the time get stuck going to 1/30th. The band leader, who also happens to own the company likes to dim the lights lower than anyone I have ever worked with.

Gain - HATE IT! but, what are you going to do? Low set to 0, mid set to +6, high set to +9. never ever +12!

So, come one, come all. Share. I look forward to finding something that I haven't thought of.

And if anyone has any experience with the XL2, please share settings. I recently shot with someone who uses an XL2, and the darker the room got, the more terrible their footage. They were shooting 30P is all I know. Seriously looked like a Xerox.

cinelike matrix suprises me... whats your reasoning on that, I like your reasons for the other settings. I normally use the "normal" matrix cause it seems to be quieter.
