Evel Knievel

When Evel was jumping it was at the peak of my childhood. He was the closest thing to a living superhero and every kid wanted to be like him. (Now they all want to be like Jackass.) I can't even tell you how many stunts Evel inspired my friends and I to do on our bicycles. You know, making ramps and seeing how far we could fly.

And when we couldn't play outside we played inside. Did anyone else have the Evel Knievel toy set as a kid?

Thanks for the good times, Evel. Hope your last jump was a good one. RIP

My little brother had that Evel Knievel toy... it might as well have been mine, though. ;)

RIP, Evel.

My parent's divorced when I was kid, and during the custody battle my dad took us for a weekend that turned into about a year. That first night or two we lived in a hotel and my dad got us all toys (3 brothers, I'm the middle). My older brother picked the GI Joe White Tiger playset. I don't remember what my little brother picked, but I got the Evel Knievel set. Evel kept me sane I guess.

That hotel room was also the place where I realized that TV doesn't wait for you. We turned off an episode of Batman to go get dinner and I expected it to pick up right where it left off when we got back.

Sad to see him go, but considering the life he led, it's amazing he made it to 69.

R.I.P.

Wow... I was surprised he had made it this far. He'll be remembered for a while. I was also a kid that watched him, and mimicked his stunts, both with his Stunt Cycle, and with my Huffy. But I only broke a wrist :)
