EVA1 vs S1 for feature film?

Well, yeah because full-frame cinema didn't exist/wasn't used for 99% of movie-making.

S35 can eventually go away just like S16 did. And SD. And 4:3.

There is certainly a difference. Those things went away because alternatives were seen as superior. I would not necessarily say the same for larger sensors. The argument could be made for 4:3 v wider frames, but it is a subconcious association just like 24fps is "cinematic." But the difference between Super-35 & Full Frame? Good luck. One stop on the aperture and .77x longer focal length and no one can tell the difference.

Definitely agree, but you know the world doesn't work like that...full-frame sensors can become a standard overnight just like power buttons if that's how companies decide to build their cameras moving forward, especially if the chip sizes have no bearing on the costs.

You can also start big and work you way down - internally - to offer everything everyone needs.

Each "downgrade" - S35, S16 - could even provide "upgrades" (various resolutions, better HFRs, better DR & color, 12-bit 4:4:4).

I remember there was a Kinefinity camera (KineMAX 6K) that claimed to offer 14 stops in 6K but 16 stops in 3K. Why? I don't know. You probably know though.

That claim was hocus-pocus, based on theory not execution. The idea was that when sampling the 6K to 3K (not a punch in), the averaging of four pixels to one would help hide so much noise as to gain more usable stops in the toe of the exposure. The reality is that there is no way one would ever increase usable DR by three full stops. It's wishful thinking.

I believe that Full Frame will definitely become a standard, but not THE standard. Super-35 will coexist alongside it for many years to come, and remain quite popular.

Yeah I live in HOLLLYWOOD haha! Right across the street from the Paramount Lot off of Melrose. And pretty much everyone I know is still bonkers about the Alexa Mini S35 4:3 sub-4k ALEVIII sensor.

Yep, same around here. Alexa sensor is still king and the golden standard. When you consider it's now 10 years old, how many sensors have come out since then and how this industry works, the Alexa strong hold is quite amazing.

Agree. What matters most is the visual difference. 16 looks quite different from S35. FF doesn't. The whole FF movement is just because current S35 cameras are already too good and you have to find another way of selling new cameras. Even movies shot on the Alexa 65 mixed with normal Alexa you can't easily find the 65 shots. Unless it was shot maximizing the effect. Audiences certainly can't. But with 16 something is definitely obvious even for the audience.

Its not amazing at all. Every other maker has crippled themselves by putting too many pixels into the S35 area which breaks dynamic range and then doesnt create a look people that visual people are nuts about.
Basically FF is 'needed' with todays tech to have big enough pixels for decent DR and 4k of resolution. 4k S35 sensors are a marginal concept.

But IMO some of it is smoke and mirrors - I guess the S35 '4k' Variacm and F55 are basically as good as the alexa - just dont hold the myth.

I think it's the other way around. The myth is that these cameras are all the same and it's all some Arri conspiracy.
