EVA1 lcd monitor a little dark

I’ve noticed that at factory default, the EVA1 lcd monitor looks dark, even at rec 709 (compared to an external monitor). Have any of you noticed that and have you been raising its brightness? Just trying to get a semi trustworthy image on the lcd screen. The fs7 at factory default was pretty trust worthy for exposure, even without using a scope.

Love the EVA1 so far. It’s a lot like the fs7.

Thanks!

Yeah, the monitor is pretty crappy...

Set the LCD backlight in monitor settings to +1 and define LCD/Monitor Boost on a custom button for best viewing experience in bright environments.

The problem still resists:

I can't pull focus in bright environments. The monitor is too low res and dark.

I used an old Zacuto Z-Finder designed for the Blackmagic Pocket last week, but I just purchased the new Z-Finder for the EVA1.
Hope that this will work better. The Z-Finder ist not really cheap for such a simple thing...

It's impossible to accurately pull focus on any on-camera LCD without using some manner of focus assist. There's no way to represent an 8-million-pixel image properly on a 1-million-pixel display device. This situation has existed since the DVX100 days, although the smaller the chips, the deeper the DOF and the less prevalent focus error could be.

Surely you're using the peaking and focus squares focus assists? Are you not finding them helpful? I find them extremely helpful.

I have never had problems pulling focus with HD resolutions.
4k is just a different league.

The focus aids are totally fine. I just can't see them in bright conditions as the monitor is a mirror and truely not bright enough.

It's even harder handheld.

I'll wait for the Z-Finder and report back.

The Z-Finder for the EVA1 arrived today.
While it's a serious piece of kit - I'll return it.

It might be the solution if you need to turn the tiny EVA1 into a shoulder camera with a rig.
But for me, shooting handheld this thing is too heavy and big while not really bringing more use than a simple loupe.
I don't know what I 'm gonna use instead...

I asked Zacuto if they can sent the 1,8 magnification glass sothat I exchange the one in my Z-Finder for the BMPCC, but they won't just do that. :(

I have the Z finder here as well and am thinking I might return it. Indeed, it is super clunky. Have not written it off yet and it seems fine if you perma leave it on the recoil rig. But if you plan to go recoil rig, then jump to another rig, then another config, it becomes not only bulky but a bit of a PIA to take on/off.

Side note: the Recoil Rig I ordered is undeniably well built, but it's stupid expensive. I should have read the description closer but it doesn't even come with the top handle in all of the pictures. I've never been so underwhelmed with a $1500 bundle as when opening the Recoil Rig + EVA1 finder. I understand the cost of R&D must be distributed but I almost feel taken advantage of at that price point. To get it to the point of the photos they show requires at least another $600. I'll see how I feel in two weeks... I'll keep it if I really like it...

Welcome to the world of Zacuto. They make Arri accessories seem fairly reasonable. Lol.

I could probably buy an EVA-1 with what I've spent on Zacuto over the years. And some of their best stuff, they don't even make any more.
