EVA1 LCD hood

As I wrote several months ago, my hood fell apart on a shoot and I lost one of the side pieces. I've been getting by with black wrap and gaffers tape since I shoot with a Gratical. However, I need the LCD for my partner to check the setup occasionally...

Has anyone discovered a good replacement hood that works well on the EVA's LCD?

I don't know... But why is Panasonic letting this faulty lcd untouched? Quality is bad. Not only the hood. The fact that it is highly reflective is curable one might think. No? Is a decent revision out of the question here? Mitch? Or at least buying the camera without the lcd at a lower price...
Don't understand why so many users put up with this. Such a nice cam apart from this. Its like a lovely girls face with a scar all over it. Good luck with the surgery!

Yeah the LCD pretty much sucks, but I do like that it's very light weight and powers from the camera - and it's sadly the only way to take advantage of the new peeking feature, which I like a lot but doesn't output to my Gratical. If some after market manufacturer made an improved version they probably sell, but I agree it would be better if Panasonic offered an improved version.

It would be nice (for me at least) if they'd at least offer an improved hood - the one I had broke after three very gentle uses. I'm surprised there hasn't been more bitching about it, especially since there's no EVF.

What new peaking feature? I was under the impression all focus assist functions pass through the SDI.

I was under that impression too, but unless I’ve missed something, after the 2.5 firmware upgrade the focus assist isn’t working. I’ve gone into the menu, and searched the internet, but, in my case at least, no green squares...

Thanks Mitch, now I have the squares. I was unable to find that information anywhere...

I still don’t have a solution to my hood problem though. Even though I handhold and view with a Gratical, my partner (who co-directs) likes to be able to see the frame occasionally. That worked well with the EVA (because it’s so light), until the hood collapsed, and I lost one of the side pieces...

I need to come up with another solution. Has anyone used an aftermarket hood on this LCD?

I think Hoodman makes something that will fit on the LCD. You can also contact our Service Dept. for a replacement part. If you feel that the hood failure may be a warranty claim then you should state that to the Service rep. and they can address it. (I'm not saying it is or isn't as I don't know the conditions of the event or the rules governing such a qualification.)

I have an old, cheap LCD4Video soft vf hood from my EX1 that seems to fit the EVA LCD - it has a couple of velcro elastic straps on the back to hold it in place. So I'm guessing that almost anything that fit the EX1 would probably work. I'll probably keep it in the EVA camera bag as a backup.

But that doesn't really get rid of the issue of the shiny screen and the amount of reflection on a bright day. I was wondering if anyone had tried trimming and applying a non-glare screen protector intended for a cell phone? They're designed for touch screen to work, though it might soften the image too much?

Mitch: Thanks for the suggestion. I probably should contact the service dept, if only to let them know this will undoubtedly be a common problem. But in my case, I don't want a part or a replacement, I want an alternative.

FYI, my hood came apart with literally zero abuse, on the third time I used it for a stationary sit-down interview.

I do have an old Hoodman that I used on a previous camera, but it's heavy, bulky and a PITA to attach. I was hoping there might be a better solution. I guess I'll have to make something myself...

Why don't you just get one of those little folding hoods from Hoodman?

Not heavy or bulky at all on those. Not much of a PIA either. Haven't used that one but I used a smaller model on my GHx cameras for ages when travelling... it's fine :)

Alternative consideration - grab a SmallHD focus or something similar used. Not too spendy. I have my SmallHD focus attached with a d-tap cable to the Core EVA1 batteries with a d-tap port so it adds no weight and is almost an equivalent all-in-one solution. Not as cheap, but pretty nice...

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm thinking about that Hoodman (my old one is very clunky, this looks a little better) and since it's cheap I'll give it a try.

In my case I'd like to use the stock LCD because it's very light, doesn't tie up either the HDMI or SDI output, and powers from the camera using the same cable. I already have three Panasonic batteries with no D Tap, so that's a consideration too.
