EVA1: EVA1 Grip Improvement Update & Serial #'s of EVA1 Camera Requiring New Grips

I see. If there was a rosette the "rotation lock design" in the handle would not be needed. The rosette is the "rotation handle design" in the pro camera handles. Keeping it simple works most of the time....

But that’s completely different, isn’t it? The EVA1 handgrip is designed to be adjusted quickly.

Oh it can be a quick release. I've done it and seen it done. Pros hang as much stuff on the camera as they can. Solid anchors are usually priority on pro gear....

Not a quick release (although the perfectly strong QR mechanism for this works great on the EVA1 handgrip), but a quick rotation adjustment. The handgrip can be rotated to eight different positions over about 200 degrees by pulling a locking pin with one's thumb. For a small, lightweight camera such as the EVA1, this is a great way to go from shooting overheat to ankle level or anywhere in between as quickly as one could want.

I know and appreciate the advantages of a classic rosette design, but there are advantages to other designs as well.

If we order an EVA1 today from an out of stock dealer (ie BH), will all new incoming cameras have the update? Is it "safe" to order now, if I do not want to deal with shipping things back and forth?

All new cameras shipping from the factory have the new grip design. As we are backordered, I sincerely doubt any dealers are sitting on old inventory.

Note that at least for US clients (I can't speak for anywhere else), Panasonic will will arrange to ship clients the replacement grip first and include a prepaid shipping label to return the old one. That way owners are never without a handgrip. There's no fee unless people don't send back the old one -- you don't get to keep that because we don't want them out there.

So is this new grip handle holding up (delaying) the next round of backorder shipments? Or are the new grips starting to be delivered?

This may seem to be a dumb question, but I searched and can't find the answer - what does the grip control? Is it start/stop only, or can it control iris, WB, ISO, etc?

The thing I miss most about my C100 (sold two years ago) is the excellent grip.

No delay at all. Cameras with new design handgrips have already been delivered and continue to be. We had to adjust handgrip production to generate replacement units for the early cameras, but that has not slowed production down.

The EVA1 handgrip has multiple controls on it. There is of course a Record trigger button. In addition there is a wheel for adjusting iris. There is also a button to allow access into the menu system, at which point the scroll wheel becomes a menu navigation & selection control. There's another button that allows you to back out of the menu, and when not in the menu system this is a User Button that defaults to the EXPAND control (image zoom for focus check). When you zoom in that scroll wheel now allows moving around the frame. And finally there's another User Button tucked away where the tip of your index finger can reach. These User Bittons can be programed with any of 28 different functions for quick controls.

Thanks Mitch, that pretty much cinches it for me - I'll wait until the dust clears... I'm tired of buying a new camera every year, and for the short term the LS300 is serving me well...
