EVA1: EVA 1 for idiots

Hi

I might rent an EVA1 (or GH5s) for a job next week - I would be looking to use it on my Ronin M or on my Steadicam Pilot - I have a few moving shots and there wont be tme to strip down my FS7. I need a light 4k log 10bit camera built for the motion rigs. It will be run with.. an operator monitor ideally my DP6 (hdmi or component/composite), my HDMI transmitter, a remote follow focus.

Codec would be 'the best' 25p log.

-12v input what is the connector?

-can I take the side handle off and still control iris on a canon lens

-for monitoring will I get HDMI and SDI at the same time
(the FS7 has a flaw that I cant remember but it doesnt do SDI and HDMI at the same time in some modes)

-I guess it doesnt have a composite/component output

-what card spec for 4k/25

- what is the hole spacing on the top

-will it work with 'no lens' aka nikon on dumb adapter.

ANy other gotchas

Same one you get on the FS5, whatever that is.

Yes. I've never used the handle. Iris control dial on the side.

For 400mb All-I you need a V90 spec card. I use the Angelbird ones and have never had an issue. Probably cheaper options out there though

God knows I had a top plate from day 1.

Yep. I use it with 'dumb' Contax glass all the time

ANy other gotchas

Make sure the sdi output isn't set to raw if you are using it for monitoring.

The biggest gotcha for me is offspeed stuff to get the highest frame rates you need to be in the long gop 100mb codec so is a bit of a menu dive.

Or fatter like lots of monitors ? DP6, Atomos etc?

Same power connector as EX1
But I'd recommend at least keeping one of the smaller Panasonic batteries in the camera - helps add a touch of weight at the back where it's helpful for balance.
When using the EVA1 on a gimbal I've also been taking off the top handle - and then using a short 15mm rod with 1/4" adapter to mount camera VF using one of the 1/4" holes on top of camera.
If you rent an EVA1 that has the WiFi adapter included I'd highly recommend installing the EVA1 ROP app on a tablet - makes it more convenient for a lot of the adjustments you might want to do.

EITHER 422 LONGGOP OR 422 ALL-I WILL WORK FINE. I SUGGEST THE ALL-I IF ONLY TO BE SURE THAT IT WILL MORE EASILY WORK WITH YOUE OTHER FOOTAGE. DON'T KNOW WHAT NLE YOU USE BUT RESOLVE REQUIRES THE PAID STUDIO VERSION TO EDIT THE 4K 10-BIT.

SAME AS COMMON SONY CONNECTOR (EX1, FS5, FS7)

YES, AND YOU CAN SET EACH INDIVIDUALY TO OUTPUT LOG OR 709, 4K V HD, SHOW ONSCREEN DATA DISPLAY. THERE IS ALSO THE ONBOARD LCD, WHICH CAN BE SET SEPARATELY TO THE TWO VIDEO OUTPUTS.

NO SORRY, THIS IS THE 21ST CENTURY. :-)

TECHNICALLY IT IS V30 FOR THE LONGGOP AND V60 FOR THE ALL-I, BUT I RECOMMEND V90 CLASS CARDS FOR ALL USE. GO WITH REPUTABLE BRANDS.

THERE ARE EIGHT 1/4"X20 THREADED SOCKETS ON THE TOP OF THE CAMERA, CONFIGURED IN A SQUARE. THE SOCKETS ARE SPACED 1" (25.4MM) CENTER-TO-CENTER.

ANy other gotchas
YOU NEED THE LCD HANDY IN ORDER TO NAVIGATE THE MENUS AND GET STATUS UPDATES. IF YOU WISH YOU CAN REPLICATE THE LCD FEED TO ONE OF THE TWO VIDEO OUTPUTS.
