EV adjustment-- +, -, or 0--Help!!

As a new d90 owner I have been pouring over the various exposure recommendations on this forum. The EV settings are the most confusing.

Some recommend leaving the EV in the +1 to +2 range to supposedly force the shutter speed into a more filmic 1/50th range.

Others recommend keeping the EV in the -1 to -2 range to help overcome the camera's tendency to overexpose and push ISO values to high numbers causing noise.

Others say leave the EV near zero.

HELP--any consensus here?? Has anyone actually measured shutter speeds with the EV in the plus range?

Thanks for the input!

good question. can somebody clarify if the EV settings are effectively locked in dmovie mode. I've read through all the posts and there didn't appear to be a consensus on this. But that was some time ago.

A further thought on the EV adjustment--

If in fact going to more negative EV settings causes a faster shutter, then we should see less of the 'jello' cam effect (faster sensor readout gives less time for motion smearing of the image). I haven't seen anyone who has noticed this!

I am guessing that the sensor is always read slowly (a a slow shutter speed), and that the EV may only effect the ISO setting. In this case a zero to negative EV would keep the ISO down.

If this is true then at least we don't have to worry about how to keep the shutter slow--it may always be. With manual F-stop adjustment, and EV tweaking the ISO we might have a little more control of our exposures than we think.

I hope that someone with more technical ability can actually do some shutter speed tests, as this would answer some of these questions.

The readout speed is constant. Exposure is how long the shutter is open on each line, not how long after the previous one it was exposed. /matt
