ESATA hard disk tower

Dear All,
Today, I went to a computer shop, and they were selling something ESATA external hard disk tower. I mean it has four drawers, and I can put hard disk into each drawer. Yes, it is something like Avid VideoRAID, yet it is much cheaper, and the whole tower without hard disk costs about USD200. Does anyone has any experience using this kind of ESATA tower? Is it fast enough for playing back on timeline and doing Digital Cut?
If someone feels this question making your laugh, please forgive me, for I am not familiar with stuffs like disk storgae and RAID, yet as I am working on DVCPRO HD format now, it takes up a lot of storage.
Thanks in advance.

Hi there,

I've been using a SansDigital eSATA external hard disk tower with 2 drawers containing 500GB drives. Absolutely no problems since getting it a year ago. I'm running AVID Xpress Pro HD 5.7.5 on a PC, 2.66Ghz Intel Core Dual, 4GB Ram, nVidia Quatro FX3450. I'm editing footage from the HVX200 (DVCPRO HD 720, 24pn).

It's WAY faster that USB or Firewire. I was having problems with USB so that's why I went with eSATA external drives. You shouldn't have any problems as long as you configure your system right!

Good luck!

Thanks, Tom!

So you're using NTSC system, as you can edit 720/24pn. Am I right? Lucky you. I'm in a PAL place.

Yes, abuot "configure your system right," can you share any hints? I think I will go for your way. BTW, how much does it cost for this tower only, without disks?

Thanks.
