Error Symbol?

On the LCD display of our DVX100a, what does the flashing red circle with a black "x" inside it represent?
Everything seems to play back fine in our Panasonic decks (AJ-D250 & AJ-D455).

Re: Error Symbol?

It means that heads are dirty. Use cleaning tape and see what happens. It also can be that the camera is getting corrupted sygnal from the tape. If cleaning desn't help, then switch the tapes. Use MQ or PQ Panasonic tapes only.
Also, please follow the manual in cleaning the heads!
Run cleaning tape in playback mode only for not more than 10seconds. After this, don't rewind the tape but leave it at this possition for future use. Don't use it more than 3 times in cleaning process cause the heads get warm and can be damaged.

Hope this helps

Re: Error Symbol?

Good advice. Actually, I wouldn't run the cleaning tape for more than 3-5 seconds at a time (just to be careful).

Re: Error Symbol?

Thanks for the replies...I'll put the cleaning tape in and see if that eliminates the problem.
With a one-time exception, I use the MQ tapes exclusively.
We've had the camera for about four months, maybe about fifty hours of recording. I play the tapes in our Panasonic decks.
I wouldn't have expected dirty heads this soon. The camera is not being used in tough environments (indoor talking heads mostly).

Re: Error Symbol?

I've had the same thing pop up a few times. The camera has just over 20 hours on it, heads cleaned manually once already, and it's back again.

I only ever use MQ tapes, period.

I wonder if this might be caused by a bad bit or two being written to the tape (for whatever reason, tape or head at fault) which the recorder "verifies" and finds that it was miswritten and immediately throws up the red X of doom.

I find that if I shut the camera off & turn it back on the X is gone.

???

Someone advised me to take it to a service center, but I haven't yet been able to stomach forking over the $100+ for them to "take a look at it."

Re: Error Symbol?

I think this is more of a "bad tape" than "bad head" issue.
Try cleaning the head AND switching the tapes.
When I say switch the tape, I mean that you buy your MQ's or PQ's from somewhere else and see what happens.
I know it sounds a bit silly when you buy such an expensive equipment and you have to go thru all this but, it's better to find the solution yourself - if it's a small problem.
I only say this because I've read that the problem can also come from "bad stock" of tapes.

Cheers

I'm having the same issue. I cleaned manually and it was back the next day. Even worse is the bad "mini blind" playback and the dropped frames during capture.

Not a bad suggestion...
I hate it though...only because I purchased twenty-five tapes.
First, I'll see what happens after running the head cleaner tape.

Re: Error Symbol?

Maybe we should start a discussion on where dvx users bought their mq tapes, and if they'd noticed a diffrence between sellers as far as tape performance
