Error message: Please turn camera off and then on again

Hi
A friend of mine has a Lumix GH1 that doesn't work.
Each time when I power it up and press the shutter botton down, the viewfinder displays 'Please turn camera off and then on again'. When I turn it off and on again, there goes the same message repeated all over again.

By the way, all other functions are disabled when the message appears. Only thing that I could do is to navigate the menu but I can't review the pictures nor to take a picture with it.

What could cause such error message? Is there a hard reset botton on the GH1?

Thanks

There are at least two threads on the (previously) GH1 forums dealing with this matter.

Unfortunately, I cannot find them by the new, and in my opinion very crippled, Advanced Search functon.

OK, my misthinking... I have one of those threads bookmarked:

"Please turn camera off and then on again"

Here's the other one, dealing with the (possible) consequences of sending a camera with this problem in for repair:

I have recently had similar problems with my GH1.During standard normal operation my camera died and I was stuck in a perpetual loop with this same message "Please Turn Camera Off and then on again"
I was unable to use any of the camera functions at all and had thought the camera was dead.
PLEASE DO TRY THE FOLLOWING BEFORE RETURNING YOUR GH1 TO PANASONIC!!!! -I have read online of several owners who have had their GH1 returned working but unable to hack firmware anymore.
when you press the menu button shortly after turning the camera back on when its in this state there is a split second glimpse of the menu screen so its clear that all the camera functions are still operating
its just this message that is stopping you from doing anything-what you need to do is this....
1.While the camera is still 'ON'-Remove its SD card
2.You should get a message saying 'no card'
3.Then press your menu button-with any luck you will now be able to access menu functions normally
4.Go to RESET in the tools part of your cameras menu that looks like a spanner and choose to RESET both REC. settings and custom settings.
5.hopefully now some of your cameras normally functionality will have returned.
6.Just to be sure I now reinstalled firmware remembering to increase the version number by 1.
7.My camera was now working again fine with stock lens but with 3rd party lenses the 'please attach lens correctly' message
was coming up again and again-to get rid of this you need to go back into the settings menu and make sure you have switched
SHOOT W/O lens to ON.

I am just relaying my working method here as i did it to revive what i thought was a dead GH1-panasonic were not much use I have to say and some of these steps may be unnecessary
and I am not promising it will solve all problems with dead or dying GH1's but its worth a shot.

I am ecstatic to have the thing back and working, the prospect of getting a GH2 or a 5d to replace it filled me with yeeeurgh
Rockin best to all GH1 'ers
