ERROR MESSAGE "Auto Off/S Reel Lock" Need help!

Hi.  We are still really new to our camera which isn't that old either, maybe 80 hours.  I put in a tape to watch dailies and it froze and gave me the message "auto off/s reel lock".  What happened and what am I to do now?  Please help.

It sounds as though the transport mechanism is having a problem with the tape. Is the tape able to turn freely? has the tape snapped? Did you try a different tape? I have never had this happen but that would be my guess. Hope this helps

The tape is okay. But yeah, the tape will not advance. Then I tried a Head Cleaning tape and (it) worked fine. Then I would put in a normal tape and sometimes it would work, but by the time I would put in a second tape, it would do it again. Could it be gunked up? It was used in the cold a day before this happened. Or could it be the tapes doing it? We're using TDK DVM60 tapes. I believe that the previous owner may have used different tapes. Would that really cause it to lock up like that though?

There is a huge debate on this board about tape and the mixing of. Who knows what tapes were used in the camera priot to your purchase. If you search this board I'm sure you'll find enough info on tape (wet or dry lube) to make your decsision. I have mostly used fuji tape with no problems. In your shoes I might be inclined to have the heads checked by a quality service rep and pro cleaned if nec. Hope this helps. :)

Thanks, I hoped it wouldn't come to that. But it is probably for the best. I wrote Panasonic and they gave me the numbers to the nearest certified service place, which is unfortunately over 200 miles away. I was at least hoping to hear from someone with the same experience, same error message.
