Error massage--I'm baffeled

I'm very new to the DVX-100a

I'm trying to record and I get the following error message:

"External DV disconnect"

I don't have a clue as to what that means.
Can someone explain the message?

It would help others in your situation if you outlined the exact problem and how it was resolved....no matter how basic.
