I had this error too - and never could figure it out. I ended up losing 10 minutes worth of footage... if you figure this out I'd love to hear about it. Hope you fare better.
Q: How did you transfer your footage off the card/camera?
I use P2 GENIE and then create a folder onto the desktop. I then drag the folder onto my external hardrive. Unfortunately its when i get the error. I am tottally lost on this because it actually import some of the other cards with no problem.
But i am stressing. How can you trust anything you are shooting. Knowing it might turn out to be crap?
-36 is an I/O error -- either the file is sitting on a bad sector, or something else is reporting an error when you try to copy the file. Did you completely uninstall your antivirus software?
I don't think so. The file is sitting on your desktop, right?
Are you moving the file or copying it? If you are trying to move the file and another application still has a handle to the file open, then yes, you could get an error because you'd be trying to pull the rug out from under that application. Try restarting your computer to ensure that all handles are closed.
I was trying to copy the file from my desktop to my external hardrive. I decided to install FINAL CUT 5.04 into my laptop and then tried to import the p2 card. While i got the dreaded message UNABLE TO IMPORT P2 CARD CORRUPT blah blah (the same message that plagued me earlier in the week in my desktop computer) At least i know all i need to do is upgrade to 5.1 since that helped my previous problem. I saw the icons of the clips from the folder that i havent been able to copy. Some i am farely confident that the file in itself is fine.
What can possibly be the problem? Is there a problem in copying files from one unit to another?
The fact your problem sounds much like mine PIMP has me more concerned. Even though I've not experienced it since, the fact it has happened to someone else makes me think there's a bug/problem out there that needs attention.
Exactly as my problem dave. Its an unusual problem since it just errors randomly. Some files work fine and then it decides to have problems with a certain one. It makes me leary of filming now since i dont even know what i am filming is going to be ok.
Here are my observations.
1) The cards seem to be fine
2)p2 genie is fine
3) Its something in either the laptop or the external hardrive.
So my question is since i cant drag it into a external hardrive. How will i be able to store this footage?
I am going to go purchase some recordable dvds. My idea is this to burn the files to dvd and then take them to my desktop and then see if i can drop them into the external hardrive from there.
Just to verify
Is my footage fine? Since the files in themselves seem to be alright.
yeah... i couldn't ever do anything with the file i had. couldn't copy it, couldn't open it, couldn't move it - nothing. in the end, i simply had to abandon it - which hurt.
i'd love a solution to this or an explanation if anybody gets to the bottom of it.
Did you ever take it to get serviced. Your laptop which seems to be the problem. And do you still film with this camera even though you fear the footage might be corrupted?
try using disk utility to store your P2 files... your workflow seems flawed.. It's best to use disk utility to make a clone of the P2 card instead of dragging the files to a hard drive (files can become corrupted that way because they are FAT32 on the card, and NTFS on your mac desktop)... Put the p2 card into your laptop.. Then open disk utility.. Click on the Mashitsa P2 Card and then click new image... Make the settings to read only and make sure there is no compression... Then Click OK to make the disk image... Eject the P2 Card... Then Mount the disk image clone from whereever you saved it and try and ingest from there...
pimp - no re: the laptop service. i don't think that's an issue. and yes i still shoot regularly, for myself and clients, with the cam without issue. my error only happened once, but that's too many times in my book and if i can figure out how to avoid it happening again...
abstract - the short story on my workflow was p2 in, p2 genie copy (to local drive), then the error. i can get behind the workflow you mention if it's indeed bombproof, but there are a lot of folks on this forum who are using p2genie or simply making folders and copying card contents, which is the workflow that's always been recommended to me. are you saying that either of those procedures are flawed? would the FAT32 transfer you bring up the prime suspect for a corrupt file in this case? i only ask because it seems to be the status quo.
