Epilogue - voilence, sex, drugs

'Epilogue' is my new short shot on the DVX. The MPAA would give it an 'R' for violence, drug references, language, and sexual content, all in a 10-minute piece. You're forewarned- so don't blame me for the downfall of society.

Here's the poster:

And the movie:
(The .avi is compressed XviD, it is somewhat smaller and of better quality, so it's preferable for those of you that can view it.)

And there's a 'behind the scenes' which I may be compressing soon and posting here as well.

Let me know what you think!

Good stuff. I didn't quite understand the story, but I was entertained the whole time. There's definitely juice in the story and characters and you pulled it off pretty well.

And your film poster is awesome.

lot's of fun to watch.

poor color correction in car conspicuous due to overall high quality.

also didn't understand why we cut back to Milo after the Bobbies montage, instead of staying in montage until car turned the corner.

didn't get the throughling of the bum?

Was that the guy with the black eye's mom?

Some cool motion effects I'd like to try.

How did you get the only the bracelett is in color effect?

You are a master with the motion razzle dazzle but I thought color correction was not as pro.

Again, enjoyed watching the whole time, loverd the zoomed character cut outs.

I give it a PG-13 rating.

Although I'm sure that the word "****" used as many times as it is, would push it to an R rating, other then that it would still be in the PG-13 realm.

I liked it. Great graphics work. I felt like it flowed well, and had a fun storyline. Kept me interested throughout the intire story. I to agree about the bum, I did not quite get that part. I also think that the still pictures were overused. They worked well for the plane flight sequence, but for the other sequences I think that live shots would have worked better. I also think that the amount of spray back from the gun shots was over the top, and unbelievable. The guy falling of the edge, and then continuing in the background as the car pulled away was great! I was LMAO!

Nice. Really liked it, again didn't quite understand all of what was going on. But some of your techniques were quite different from standard stuff. Reminded me alot of Snatch.

While the effects were cool and enjoyable they still need some refinement. Your sound quality was really good. I appreciated the wilhelm scream of the guy falling off the building. Its nice to see people use special effects to heighten the reality of the story instead of just using them as "I learned how to lightsaber, bring on the jedi!!!" You made good use of the skills you have.

Speaking of which, how did you do that with the table flipping over and stuff? really interesting effect there.

Good job.

That had some great effects and I really enjoyed the transitions with the still shots and fast movement. Some of your special effects were great. Like most of the people said, I had no clue what was going on, but it was well enough done to make me want to keep watching.

Also, if I didn't know better, you were driving a car from Maryland!

That was some good **** man. Like someone else said too much blowback on the guns but other that it seemed fine. The car conversation footage looked raw, it could have used better colour correction for most of the movie, but it didn't change the enjoyability of the movie, tell us how did those motion effects, they were pretty damn cool.

One thing: that briefcase was actually a camera case wasn't it?

All in all it was good.

Put up that behind the scenes footage!

one of the best shorts i've seen, and i've seen hundreds. As far as the story though, not easily followable. Kept me glued though, for the special fx's.

Watched million dollar baby the other day(for the first time). Not one special effect shot in the movie I think. Excellent story though. Great movie.

Thanks for all the feedback everyone. It's really cool to read the comments (good & bad).

PLOT - A lot of people (not just here at DVXuser) say it doesn't make much sense. It doesn't. The original idea with it was to make a short that felt more like you stumbled in to watching the last 10 minutes of a feature or something. So every aspect of the story wouldn't be explained, but there would be enough there to generally understand the gist, and it would bring the focus away from the plot (since there isn't much time for that in 10 minutes anyway) and put it on just getting to hang out with these [hopefully entertaining] characters for a little while. Some would say we pulled that off-- most would say we made an anti-climactic confusing mess. :P

SOUND - All the music was recorded specifically for this movie, and with the exception of the the opening (catholic hymn) and closing (Brazilian samba) songs, they're all original compositions as well. We used a cheap-o shotgun (AT835b) for all the ADR. I did that cause I wanted to match the location sound. But we ended up going almost all ADR, so we should've just used a nicer sounding non-shotgun mic for the ADR.

EFFECTS - The b&w/color bracelet shot I had to rotoscope frame by frame. It really sucked. It took 50 billion years. In fact I'm still doing it right now. The blowback from the bullets was supposed to be over-the-top/cartoony... but yeah I agree it's one of the sloppier effects in there. For the composite I actually used the spit from the boss' spit-take dyed-red and sped-up as the gush of blood that comes out of their chests.

I'm working on getting a torrent together of the behind-the-scenes thing... it goes into detail about some of the other stuff. And my bandwidth is getting hit too hard right now to have anything else on the web server.

Thanks again for all the feedback! Keep it comin'.

Oh, and clearly the movie was shot entirely on location in London and Rio with native actors. Any accusations to the contrary are false. MD license plate -- as if!!

Man I can't believe I'm still rotoscoping that bracelet shot.

Did you import that Washington Post newspaper stand to London as well? :) I hope your behind the scenes will show how you did that matrix-like camera movement!

WOW...some of the funkiest transitions that I've seen on this site. looked sweet!!

Your titles looked very professional too . It had a very MTV look. What did you use to do you're titles? Would love to see a tutorial on that. great effects.

Look forward to seeing more.

I just need to know how did that table flip man! (but then again I have no knowledge of motion effects - though I want to learn)

Fala meu, trocadinho? Beleza? Foda...

Good speech. You probably summed up the ten most spoken words in Brazil. And I've never seen that building in Rio before... :)

Err, I did understand most of the story, and I liked Pickle and his tortured soul that belongs to the devil. Also, the actor that played the devil was very well cast.

I loved the still transitions, worked like a charm for me, and prabably kept the film much cheaper... I didn't love the beggining face off with the russian mobster though.

What it lacked was some sort of turning point. The whole plot didn't work very fluidly. It surely feels like excerpts of some bigger film, but I don't get the point to why is this good?

Congratulations for the short.

Ah, and also, there is this movie you might want to watch... Have you heard of Snatch? You are going to love it... :)
