EPIC X is rolling

Congrats Red Camera Company! I (as I'm sure many do) wish Red the best with their deploy. I hope the reality ends up to be as bright as everyone has hoped. Although it is a different landscape and I'm sure many "would be" customers have moved on, HATS OFF!!! The finish line is near....now the REAL work begins! Best of luck Red Camera Co!!!

That's possible. But Jim also said there was a "small lens issue" with Scarlet that needs addressing. Who knows that means? Could mean a one week additional delay, could mean a few months.

That is fantastic news! If you happen to have the all the thousands of $$$ you need for an Epic, really fantastic news! Is as great news as when Alexa started production!

Fantastic! 35k and you have a working cutting edge cinema camera! Now where do I find 35k?

Hmmm... you may just need to find your nearest rental house and skip the 35k all together. I say congrats to RED. After all the bashing going on and delay after dreadful delay, they've stuck to their guns, worked their arses off, and delivered. Finally. Good enough for me, and I hope they all take a day off. They deserve it

35k? Not for a shootable kit :undecided Though I agree...hats off to RED for making this a reality.

I think we may be surprised...

That totals to $36,050.00. Of course, given the nature of the camera, it's a little different than pricing out other cameras; there are a lot of individual choice factors to be considered. For instance, I'm assuming that one is okay running off p/d-tap, not the custom RED batteries. And I'm assuming that one wants the REDMOTE, even though they don't need it with the touchscreen. And I'm assuming that one doesn't want the sidehandle, because they are using the camera on tripods or on a rig they already own, plus they have both the touchscreen and the REDMOTE for control. And I'm assuming that the owner already has a collection or at least access to either Canon or PL lenses.

It's a neat thought experiment, and not perfect for every situation, but that is a "shootable kit". The biggest hurdle, I think, would be the media. There's not much room for that in the $35K budget, meaning record times will be short. Oh, and tax. But, basically, if you are willing to sacrifice, it can be done handily.

Assuming the owner has lenses is a pretty big assumption, but I get your point. I guess to me, if youre spending that much money - you'd want to make sure you have a kit to handle all your shooting needs.

Oh, I agree. If you are going to spend $36K on a camera, and have the cash to do that, I think it would make a lot more sense to save up a bit more and do it properly. My post was more about what someone could do than what is probably rational or reasonable.

And regarding lensing, I'm just thinking of the multitudes of 5d/7d/550D/60d owners who have at least a couple of Canon lenses for their kit.

Excellent news.
Seeing how much what's next in line costs, I think it's a very good deal, especially for R1 owners.

At least it isn't a Sony camera. You'd be paying every time they enabled something that should've been there all along.

Why is the concept of a modular camera when it goes as far as to include firmware or software as an option so foreign to people?
