Pain in the ass
Have a shoot coming up and need to simulate some innards falling out of a gut.

What's your favorite material for this? Animal parts? Foam rubber?

Nice, thanks, I like the sausage casing and spghetti one. I was thinking about just getting some animal parts from the butcher...I think it will be fine as lone as I keep them on ice until the shoot, then toss after...is there any crazy unsanitary danger to this approach?
 
uncooked animal products would always carry a risk.... it's the cooking of it that kills it off and makes it safe to consume...

I'd think, yes in this case... not 100%, but certainly a risk, and maybe a health code violation if you got down to it... but, i wouldn't really know... I'm just speculating....

I'm just thinking of that being on someone and the bacteria, etc that might spread around... someone rubs their eyes or something, and... yeah.... only if you really don't like the people :)

From googling around, seems like you could probably get a nice simulation on minimal funds anyways... so, if there are other good options, I wouldn't even consider using the real thing...

I think the spaghetti and sausage casing could look good if you made a better blood than just their food coloring...
 
Good points. Thanks. Will proceed with some testing this weekend...luckily, much of this shooting is in dark places with only flashlights and other small streaks of light illuminating the guts and blood. So it's a little easier to get away with it.
 
That last one is really good. And might actually be the best results I've seen so far...

I was contemplating doing this in post, but don't think I could pull it off. It cannot look at all fake, and I think I can get closer to that with practicals. Besides, the nature of the shooting is all hand-held camcorder, like found footage, so I would have to shoot much higher res, with much more lighting, and less movement(add some of that in post too).

I think I will try to test a couple of these methods by this weekend and see how they go. Will put up some shots here probably.
 
we just did this Saturday.. pantyhose filled with newspaper, soaked in Jello.

There was a Nurse Jackie episode in which a guy was rolled in, laying on his back, with about a foot of his intestines protruding from his belly. They were surprisingly clean.
 
That*panty hose trick looks good to me too...again, this only has to be glanced in random flashlights, etc. Will prob test that one too see what's cheaper.

Sorry what exactly do you mean soaked in Jello? Like you mixed up the Jello juice and just didn't refrig it, left it runny and then soaked panty hose in it?
 
we stuffed panty hose with newspaper, and then made some "Red" jello, but didn't let it congeal. just soaked the intestines in the liquid part over night, along with a tad of fake blood. They look great on camera. I'll post some stills from our shoot where we used them as soon as I can get the footage captured.
