Entertaining debate on BMC and 5d3 sharpness

Thank you! It was my first time using Da Vinchi resolve so there was a bit of a learning curve I was dealing with, I spent a lot of time trying to bring down the highlights which seem to be hot to start with? And had no success bringing them down on her face, I guess I still have to figure this program out. I'm sure it's just my inexperience with resolve, but I do love the esthetic of the BMC very film like quality and so far very impressed. I can't wait to see what can be done with the pro res files:) I also still love
The 5D mark 3 but nowhere near the sharpness and detail of the BMC...
Your grade is thye best one I have seen of the sparkler scene. Much more attractive overall than the stock grades that are less "neutral." I like it a lot.

The same on the interior scene, but it seems like you have to almost totally blow the highlights on the face to make her look good. Just a product of the lighting? Let's hope.

Nothing in any of those files as far as skin goes is "blown out"

Blown out refers to a complete lack of detail in overexposed areas.

Everything in regards to her face was there.

It may have been exposed hot, but certainly wasn't blown out.

There'll be a period where everyone sifts through their own data, learning how to expose the raw in camera for best results. As familiar as I am with working on R3D and in Resolve, it was still a surprise to me to see how bright these DNGs came in.

@frank- the BMCC did pretty well against the FS100. The RAW grade- her eyes- look really good.

Just did a little shootout:

Looks like a great scene for a shootout! But holy crap, youtube compression is SO BAD! I couldn't tell a damn thing! Well, beside the latitude... which does look downright amazing on the BMC. That lantern is basically a giant light flare on the FS100, but never blows out with the BMC. Very nice!

So the question is, since you can look at the actual files, what actually looked better here noise-wise?

For the record... super hesitant to participate in this thread... but..

The RAW is definitely more stout. But, not as much as I anticipated, must be a damned good implementation of ProRes. I'd give it a fifteen percent spread, which in some cases is a really good margin to have. In others, nah, shoot out the quick format.

Basically, you have a choice without being forced into an external recorder.

Anyway, your choice, I wasn't going to download but I did and I'm glad I took the time.
