i have a sorcerer capturing a gang of gangsters in a energy field can anybody give me a sugestion how to make the circle of energy around the gangsters?
3D Particles with a mask layer for where the gangsters would be located in the middle of the ring of partcles (to obscure the back side).
Might be cool to also use a layer of a lightning type effect, then apply polar to it, so it becomes a ring and rotate it on the x axis to it lays down a bit more flat...
In fact, you could probably get away with using that same kind of technique for both particles and lightning.. have them flowing straight across the screen, then apply polar coordinates to it so it will become a ring, rotate, mask, done.. Trust me, it looks really cool in my mind.
I know I saw a tutorial about creating a mask to hide a portion of a particle system recently.. I'll have to look for it.
the idea is to show a witch point to a group of gangsters, imagine that the gangsters are in the center of the image in a circle looking around, and i want to that circle be a field of energy (glowing energy) surrounding them, and they can't escape from that. a 3d energy field around them. sorry my bad english.
fractal noise layer, animate the parameters, make a mask in the shape of the force field, feather the mask a bit, apply effects till it looks like something you like, play with the layer styles until you get what you like.
you can probably add something to the effect by using the sphere effect to make one of your video layers into a sphere, use something that is magical looking or whatnot. (you can generate something using a solid and a decent fractal effect) then change its size to be around the guys and its blending mode to screen or add and youve got a magic bubble that they are in. I would take down its opacity and rotate it so you cant see the seems (put them on the sides) unless youve got a seemless magical texture. add some alpha glow or shine or something to blend it together better and its just a quick way to make something into an "3D orb" or glowing sphere that may help the look you want.
I'de do it with a 3D object. You can texture something like a sphere shape, or whatever shape you want with simple procedurals, but you also have the ability to change the shape of the field, like having it warp and flex by using more or different procedurals as a true 3D displacement.
I'm thinking mostly of the scene in the first Fantastic 4 where the fire guy is creating that huge fire cloud, and the girl is using a force field to contain it.
And, depending on your shot, you just render half at a time. The half in front of them, and the half behind (you simply tell your 3D program not to render certain portions) and then put it together in a compositing app with the half in front of them on top, the main plate below that, and the behind them render on the bottom. You'l have to do some small rotoscoping, but since it should be an effect that is quick or flares to life, you have the bonus of not doing that much rotoing.
Plus, if you use even a simple black and white procedural, you then have the option of using all the power of your compositing package to tweak the hell out of the render. Simple blending modes like Add or Screen will blend them, but you can also color it, add glows, create additional layers and blur them for even more of a glow look.
The hard part of the whole thing is making something that surrounds them, but at the same time, something that you can mask out only what is behind them and leave the rest on top and intact.
