Energy drinks!!!!!!!?

I just met a guy from the Philippines, and he said redbull was something only sold in small little viles in drug stores... and then my Chinese friend said it was like that too in China...
Here in Australia we have like 20 different brands and they sell them in 270-500ml bottles and cans. And you can get them everywhere you can get a can of coke.. they’re huge here.
What’s it like where you live???

Red Bull comes in up to just-shy-of-coke-can sizes, here.

Stuff's absolutely deadly. Avoid like the plague.

me and a few of my friends all drink at least 1 somtimes 2 of the big 500ml cans every day when we're working on a film... those 12 hours days get to you...

I was hospitalized for a few days after drinking them (I actually walked myself in to the hospital). Heart was skipping uncontrollably. It wasn't a big deal for the doctors since my heart and everything else was healthy....but caffeine (especially at those doses) is deadly. The warning is it can have that affect on some folks...and it can eventually catch up with others.

It's not just the caffeine. In fact, the caffeine is the least worrisome issue with energy drinks.

It is very easy to overdose on B vitamins, and these drinks are packed full of them. B vitamins may give you a lift, but after cramming them into your system time and time again, they cause irreparable heart damage. Kids who drink two or three a day will have heart troubles by the time they reach their mid-to-late 20s, if that.

Ginseng is another one to watch. It also gives a nice lift at first, but the stuff builds up in your lower GI tract. Drink it daily, and eventually you'll start bleeding when you poop.

Taurine has absolutely no proven energy benefits, but studies have shown that it may induce psoriasis.

We have a "bigger is better" attitude about food an drink here in the States, and the sizes of energy drink cans that are widely available are absolutely disgusting. They're nothing more than cans of poison.

There is nothing better to have on set than some energy drinks. If someone is in a bad mood, it can provide a pickme up and also get crew people moving a lot faster. Sometimes it's not easy to have a pot of coffee around or it might be too hot. We shot in a warehouse for around 12 hours with no AC, just two fans we kicked on in between takes. It was so hot that we had to put a fan on the camera so it wouldn't overheat.

We had bottled waters, gatorades and red bulls on ice (I try to avoid sodas on set because I find they make you dehydrated). The red bulls went really fast, the crew and actors love them and I honestly don't think I'll do another shoot in the future without energy drinks on set. Also everyone knows they are kind of expensive, so when they see them, they get a little excited. Some people drink them only once or twice a week, so it's kind of like a treat on set. Just my opinion.

If you want to watch the short...

Mmmmmm, energy drinks. I start my day with a triple size Monster. Can't do the "Big Rig" though, I tried. It caused my vision to go pinpoint so that all I could see was what was in front of me and no peripheral vision.

Keep in mind though I used to take Ritalin (and probably should still be on it). My brain handles caffeine differently than most people. A couple of cups of coffee, relaxes me and I could take a nap.

Caffeine is a diuretic... it does dehydrate you (though you can build up a tolerance to that). A 12oz. can of Coke has 35mg of caffeine, an 8.5oz can of Red Bull has 80mg. So you need to drink almost 2 1/2 cans of Coke to get the same amount of caffeine as one can of Red Bull... however, you're also drinking almost four times the fluids to get it, so Red Bull is much more likely to dehydrate you than Coke for the equivalent amount of caffeine

When I worked at the Hit Factory in NYC many years ago. These kids came in with these Red Bull backpacks and gave us cans of the stuff every day for a week. The thing is we had no idea what Red Bull was. but they were free so we drank them back to back for hours and me and jaime started to get the shakes and he had effing panic attack. Then I got freaked out because he was freaking out. And the owner came in and thought we in the studio sniffing cocaine. Once we got that figured out the red bull people were no longer allowed in the studio and I stayed away from the stuff for years.

Maintaining yourself in decent physical condition (daily exercise, reasonable dietary practice, stress management) absolutely blows the doors off any temporary, pay-for-it later effect one can achieve using 'energy drinks.' Not to mention the incidental side-effect of actually being in better condition to handle what you have to handle.

What you get out of Red Bull etc is a cheap 'n' easy temporary 'boost' that can frequently leave you in worse shape 30 minutes later, than when you enjoyed the drink (btw I do like the way they taste, like kids' vitamins, I just don't care for their effects).

I figure that there's probably some proportion of the population that can obtain the nice feels-like-a-lift effect without having to pay too much of a noticeable price immediately afterwards. But it's no substitute for being in actual good health and drawing your energy from your own reserves rather than artificially goosing your system with stimulants.

And, as Richard has pointed out, the stuff's not much of a substitute for cocaine, either.

I find when I'm on my feet all day I actually get less tired. It's when I'm sitting down all day that I have energy problems. Still, the most I do for a pick me up is one or two cups of coffee a day. I've also found a teaspoon of honey with cinammon will snap me out of the morning blahs faster than anything. Red Bull just makes me feel weird. The only time I've used it is on a very long, 12 hour plus drive to keep me alert.

I drink too much coffee, I'll admit. But what I have also found is that, after a couple cups of coffee in the morning, switching to tea in the afternoon is quite effective.

As for caffeine being a diuretic, newer studies show that it isn't as drastic as the older studies* once suggested. With sodas, it isn't as much the caffeine that's a problem for keeping yourself on top all day... it's the massive amounts of high fructose corn syrup, plus the carbonation. If it's too hot, try iced tea. Down south, we have sweet tea, and if you brew your own you can control how much sugar goes into the pitcher.

*Studies have shown that research causes cancer in rats.

For staying hydrated and obtaining associated benefits I have found that water is surprisingly effective...

I don't drink coffee at all when I'm working. Somehow I lost the habit. It's good on weekends, though.

I don't know, but this summer when I was working on a feature I once adventured into the supply room and wow those were some nice mountains of coke hahahaha..... The daily consuption of cokes of the entire crew and cast was way beyond my understanding...

I don't drink coke and I will never drink it, it tastes disgusting in my opinion, even more in the states (too sweet), this summer I was in New York and Toronto and I got to compare three exact cans of coke, one in new yok, one in Toronto and One here in Spain. Those in the americas had 40+grams of sugar whilst the one here has 24... that tells something about the cultutral preferences I think....
