End of All Rivers

Well, I’ve finally finished cutting my first semi-serious attempt at video. These images were taken during the late summer on Washington’s Olympic Peninsula. I shot with the GH1 on a Gitzo 1348 CF tripod with a Libec H22 fluid head. I used 720p 60 AVCHD and the Vivid setting, but all at manual exposures (Creative setting) with lots of NDs etc to keep shutter speed sane. I mostly used manual focus Nikon F lenses such as the Zeiss ZF 35mm f2, the Nikkor 105mm f2.8 VR and the 60mm f2.8 macro. I also shot with the Panasonic 14-140mm HD lens as well as the 45-200mm and the Oly 9-18mm WA.
The footage was cut in iMovie ’09 where I did some slo-mo and added some saturation.

I set it to Bruce Cockburn’s “End of All Rivers”, from his marvelous album “Speechless - The Instrumental Bruce Cockburn”.

Cheers,

Gorgeous stuff. Nice job. Gave a real intimate sense of the place. Really liked the music too.

Many thanks for the kind words. Whereas I'm confident about stills shooting, video is new to me.

I'd like to start using FCP 2 (my current version) for this but I'm still not clear on inhaling the AVCHD into it. I see many people using Neoscene, Voltaic etc prior to FCP. Can't it be done with just FCP and Compressor? Any guidance would be appreciated. (Obviously, I'm a FCS neophyte!)

Cheers,

I am using FCS 3 and that's what I do. That's what I did on 2 as well...compressor and FCS work fine if you know what you're doing. In theory they're not the fastest ways but they work great.

Ben,

I guess I'm in the "not knowing what I'm doing" category! I keep looking at the Workflow forum, but I've yet to see any good tutorial on the exact methods needed, especially the use of Compressor for pulldown removal. Any guidance would be great.

I'm glad you liked the video. It's so rewarding to actually have finished one and gotten some good feedback.

Ciao,
