Encore Sucks?

RLM,
If your buttons are just text, you may or may not be able to shrink the button box too much without resizing the text. I think there are rules in the DVD spec that govern some of this. However, you'll notice in the toolbox there is more than one pointer tool. Again, I don't have it in front of me to check but one is a solid arrow and the next one is hollow (I think). The solid one is for manipulating the entire button and all of its elements together. The hollow one can be used to select just an element in the button to change. Use the hollow one and click on the boundary box to highlight it. Then try clicking and dragging a corner or edge. The text inside won't change (I think). Sorry if I'm describing this incorrectly. Hopefully it will get you on the right track.

Okay...I am going to get this DVD finalized ONE freaking DVXuser post at a time....

I tried moving the buttons around so they are not touching. Checked the project and lo and behold the error message is gone. If the error message was there, would ENCORE still let me BUILD the DVD? Or better yet, is there a way to reduce the button size by pulling on the blue bounding box without scaling the button inside of the bounding box? My buttons are text. I dont want them to get too small. But the bounding box is HUGE and way bigger than the button causing all of this overlapping mayhem.

Thanks again.

When this gets done, Im buying you all a beer. Dewman...might be some time before I can get to Kentucky though...

ALLRIGHT!!! THATS IT!!!

Everything is set up. Looks good. I'm satisfied with it. I managed to get rid of all of the errors. Now, aye, heres the rub. I click BUILD PROJECT. It brings me to the next window. I click next. Let it do its thing for a sec. Then I click BUILD. About a single solitary second into it I get an ERROR message popping up saying INVALID AVI FILE. (DVD-ERROR 26400). What in GODSname. So, I go to ADOBES helpsite, it tells me that I 'might' (might being the operative word here) need to upgrade to 2.0. You kidding me?

Mind you, this file was FINE yesterday. I brought it into ENCORE yesterday to build a DVD without menus to see how it looked and sounded on my TV. I had NO problems with this file. Now, after all of this it is not allowing me to use it...a file it had no problem handling yesterday?

THERE HAS GOT TO BE A BETTER DVD AUTHORING PROGRAM OUT THERE.

Man I am feeling your pain right now. I am going to have to author some DVD's in the near future and am dreading it! I know what I want it to look like, but getting the program to work with me is ridiculous.

I do think this program sucks though. It isn't just that it doesn't hold your hand. Photoshop is really hard to learn and extremely powerful. But I understand the functions after a little while of trying to learn it. Encore on the other hand is made for the sole purpose of confusing you. On the surface you would think DVD creation wouldn't be so difficult to learn.

Okay-

To all of you VERY VERY patient guys and gals who have been giving me advice...

I have a disk building right now. I have no idea if it'll work. Right now, I have DISC BUILDING LOW SELF ESTEEM. But, nearly 24 hours duking it out with this Godforsaken program, venting to all of you people, all I can do now is wait.

I don't expect you to be on the edge of your seats. But, I'll keep you posted anyway...

I haven't been this anxious since JLo missed her period and Marc Anthony came looking for me!

IT WORKED!!!!!! Thank you so much ALL of you who contributed to this. I could not have done this without your advice (that goes for you too REFLEX) and patience...I feel like I just won an award and am thanking the academy.

I would have signed back on yesterday to let you all know but in my elation, I shut the DVD off, and took my girlfriend out to dinner for putting up with me.

I'm not 100% sure how I did it but when I revisit this program (God help us) I think I'll be able to retrace my steps. I am still a little unsure of all the choices I have when I assign a command to END or OVERRIDE...but, it'll come to me.

Thanks again everybody.

Rick
PS Alex, Marc was after me for that too. No worries. Hes got a great voice but hes not much of a fighter.

Congrats. I'm sure I will be having some encore problems of my own in a week or two. Hopefully not, but I won't hold my breath.

**** I was thinking about getting Encore, but now I'm scared
I would be a bit scared in purchasing 1.0 (if you can afford the latter versions, try those out or find out if they're good-- I think I read from a poster that the 2.0+ versions are a bit more solid). I own that version, and had wierd things happen to me while using it. I would connect a chaper point (it works a bit like Dream Weaver), and have all of my links set, double check them... then in the preview chapter 4 would link to chapter 1. I also had projects saved, and would not re-open. I have a high-end PC, so the encoding times were very nice, but I was usually getting about a 10% rate of my project being completely FUBAR.
I like most Adobe programs, and would like to see if the latter versions of this program have been cleaned up a bit.

As far as learning Encore, I bought a Visual Quickpro Guide by Peachpit Press, and learned the program in about 3 days. I have owned 1.0 for about two years, and have been moderately satisfied with it.

OK...I took your advice and bought the Visual Quickpro Guide today. I will receive it in a week or two...depending upon the speediness of AMAZON. However, I was wondering one thing...why my sisters wedding video wont play in typical DVD players?
I checked the DVD ENCORE file on my PC and I only see the Video File...NO AUDIO file. ...This ASSET was brought into DVD ENCORE 1.5 as an AVI.

Any ideas??

Rick

this is an issue with dvd production, if your sister has an older dvd player...burn two DVD's media types: +R and -R; see which one plays for her. This is not a software issue...if you want 100% compatiability for the DVD's you will need a glass master dvd made...which is not economical, unless you or your client are going to purchase more than a 1000 dvds...

dewman...thanks for the reply....

Let me give you some more information....I exported her wedding video with chapters and all that jazz from ENCORE 1.5 to a MAXELL DVD-R printable DVD. The disc plays fine in a Divx player and on any pc. My PC can read it. My laptop can read it. My girlfriends laptop can read it, etc.

But, when I tried to run it on my friends stand-alone DVD player, nadda. (she has two players...neither would recognize it). I tried it on another stand-alone player...the error message said, "not a clean disc"...I tried to play it on the DVD player at the vacation house I was just at...no luck. But, while on vacation, I bought another Divx player and it played fine. I don't understand what it is about the way this disc is being received by stand-alone players...

Any ideas? 4 stand-alone players...no luck whatsoever. All my PCs and 2 Divx players....it plays fine.

encore is a fantastic program... the only problem i ran into was: when i watched the AVI file in encore, all of my full-frame still titles (ex. the comically misplaced intermission) flashed onto the screen for a quarter of a millisecond and then the frame AFTER the title freezed for the duration of the time that it was supposed to be the intermission title.

otherwise, i love incorporating PSD files into encore... fantastic and everything else turned out great! wonderful authoring program. all except for that problem above.

thanks!

No problem. You go into user control panel click and on edit signature. To click on the image you enter the string like this: [ url=http://ww w.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=59907 ] [ img ]http://img373.imageshack.us/img373/9815/herofestsig2hx.jp g[ /img ] [ /url ]

The url= is the pointer to where you want them to go. The is the image they are clicking on. Make sure to take out the extra spaces I added in.

Hope this helps,
Alex
