Encoding: help please?

Can someone explain the use of encoding, like with Sorensen Squeeze, for example? I can export to a QT ref and bring that into Sonic DVD, al least sometimes without a problem. Though, I am having problems exporting from Avid to a working QT file.
Anyway, what does encoding do? Why use it? Thanks.

Encoding takes a file of one format and "encodes" onto another. It is needed for creating DVD MPEG2 files since the editing sources are not in MPEG2 format.

So then in Sonic DVD I see it sometimes automatically encoding for me. So, this must be for formats that the DVD author may not be able to handle. Is there a preference for format? Is MPEG2 the best?

MPEG2 is the ONLY format for DVD. If you are taking any video type other than MPEG2 into Sonic it will re-encode it before burning your disc.
