Encoding HDV for DVD

I have read up on this, but the information covers so many different formats that I haven't been able to distill it down to an answer that applies to me, so I need some help.

I shoot my footage using a Panasonic hvx200 and capture directly to hard drive via onlocation. I then edit the files using Adobe Premiere Pro CS3 (HDV 1080p 29.97 1440 X 1080, 16:9 anamorphic). I need to get these projects onto DVD, but exporting to media encoder produces really poor quality DVDs. What is the best method for exporting this footage for DVD (I am willing to invest additional funds to get reasonable results)?

How poor is poor ? What happens to your footage when you export to SD?

I usually export my final HD edit to quicktime sorenson3. Then I convert that to SD / or to Sd straightaway .Give it a try.

You need to open up an SD project, import the HD project file into the timeline, and shrink each clip by 45% (make sure that Scale to Frame Size is Off). Then render out a regular SD file from the Media Encoder. This will make it look good.

Thanks for the input. I tried everything above and burned about 25 dvds with different versions of the footage. Huv Vu's settings worked, but I got (marginally) better results from the following:

Create DVCPro HD 1080i project and import original footage.

Exported movie to SD AVI with following settings:
File Type: Microsoft DV AVI
Compressor: DV NTSC
Color Depth: Millions of Colors
Frame size: 720x480
Frame Rate: 29.97fps
Pixel Aspect Ratio: D1/DV NTSC Widescreen(1.2)
Data Rate: Recompress is UNCHECKED
Fields: No fields (Progressive Scan) & Deinterlace Video Footage CHECKED

Then,

Import AVI into Encore, encode using "Progressive High quality 7MB VBR 2 Pass" and resulting DVD should look great on a SD TV and HDTV.
