emmy and oscar awards

What is the deal with these awards? I know one guy that has claimed to win an Oscar, but when I talked to him directly about it, he says he was one among several and that they only give three out for the same credit. He was at the bottom of the list, so he didn't actually receive the physical award.

Another guy claims an Emmy, however, when I checked the film that he worked on there were eight guys that had the same credit.

My question is: how does one distinguish between getting the actual award and being in the same credits for others that received it? Are the two above individuals correct in saying they won the respective award?

I can't speak for Oscars, but with Emmy's, there are categories, such as for Sports Broadcast, where it's an entire team of people and if a persons name was on the list that was submitted for that and it won, they would technically be an Emmy Winner and eligible to buy a statuette.

It's accepted that the "best show" awards are given to the whole production team. And, when one looks at credits for most shows, it's not unusual to find a dozen names with the producer credit - executive, co-executive, supervising, associate, line, co-, etc. (line producers are tasked with the "mundane" nuts and bolts of the operation, while others are usually writers and directors). Most winning teams will bring everyone up on stage but there obviously won't be a dozen statuettes to hand out.

PS. As discussed in the writing threads, pretty much every sitcom script is rewritten for the shooting draft by the senior staff writers (those with the executive/co-executive/supervising status) and what often happens is that a junior level writer can win an award for the script s/he didn't really write.
