Emergency! Please Help Me Adjust 24P DVX Footage to Match Other Footage!

Hello Friends, I just did an event shoot 3 days ago. I just sold my GL2 so I hired a talented young man as my A cameraman, and I used my HV30 as a B cam.

I set the HV30 to standard definition 29.97 FPS, interlaced, cinema mode.

I asked him to set his DVX100B to 29.97 FPS, interlaced. I don't know the DVX well enough to ask him to change the color profile.

The plan was to make sure both cameras shot at the same frame rate, then color correct the B Roll (HV30) footage to match the DVX 100B footage as closely as possible. We both shot 2 tapes.

***

When I captured all the tapes, to my dismay, I found that his second tape had somehow reverted to 24P!

I have to get the footage to the client for review by Monday. Here is the problem I am looking to solve:

  • The client will have no idea how to deal with 24P footage
  • The motion quality of the footage on the 24P tape is noticeably different from all the other tapes.
  • The 24P tape is waaay over-saturated. I am not sure why this happened.
I am using Vegas 9. I feel I can color-correct it so the reds are not terrible as they are now, but I am lost as far as what to do with the frame rate. Should I export it from Vegas as 29.97 interlaced?

Is it possible that in changing tapes that the camera inadvertently reverted back to 24P, or would someone have to deliberately go into the menu and change the setting back to 24P?

Thanks,

Ken

Okay everyone, in case somebody else has this problem. In Vegas, there is a setting under preferences>General to stop Vegas from automatically recognizing and using the 24P 2-3-3-2 pulldown.

Once I found this setting I was able to use the footage alongside all the other 29.97 footage and render it to a standard NTSC DVD without a problem.

What I would still like to know is if it is possible for the camera to automatically switch/revert to 24P.

P.S. If a moderator will move it, I guess this thread belongs in the technical section.

Thanks for the fyi
About your Swtich question, he must have accidently switched the scene file. To my knolledge there is no way you can automatically/magically switch from 24/30/60.

What happened was that the camera was turned off (for a battery change, etc.), or switched over to VCR mode, and the scene file reverted to what it was originally, and the frame rate reverted along with it. You must save the scene file if you want it to stick.

Yes, you can export from Vegas as NTSC DV (29.97), but the motion cadence will still be 24 fps, so it'll look the same. Nothing you can do about that.

You can do that anyway, even without disabling pulldown removal in the options. Vegas always captures any DV at 29.97, including 24p DV; pulldown is only removed if you drop the footage onto a 24p timeline. If you edit on a 60i timeline, you're working with it without the pulldown removed.

Your bigger problem is going to be the possible increased stutter of the 2:3:3:2 pulldown cadence. Your better bet by far is to allow pulldown removal, work with the footage (color correction) on a 24p timeline, and THEN export as NTSC DV for mixing with the other footage. The file you export will have 2:3 motion cadence, which at least will not have the 2:3:3:2 motion stutter. And, working with the progressive frames will give you better results when you manipulate the footage to match the OTHER footage. So again, do not disable pulldown removal, put the footage on a 24p timeline, do what you need to, then export as NTSC DV.

Hey David and Kevmo, thanks for the replies!

David, I thought the exact same thing at first. However in Vegas 9 when "Allow Pulldown Removal when Opening 24p" was checked in the preferences, I always saw "DV (Removing 2-3-3-2 pulldown)" when checking the video properties whether on a standard NTSC timeline or a 24P timeline.

As long as the pulldown setting was checked, the 2-3-3-2 cadence was always apparent while working on any type of timeline. And when I exported the video it looked very bad because during this shoot the camera was moving around a lot. We were following a group of people walking around a large area.

Before I found the setting to turn off pulldown removal, I literally spent nearly all of yesterday laying the file down on every possible timeline type from the presets and/or tweaking the preset setting. I exported to every possible combination either DV Avi or M2V and my results ranged from choppy to crashing Encore.

Once I turned the pulldown setting off, "DV (Removing 2-3-3-2 pulldown)" disappeared from the video clip's properties. The entire 2-3-3-2 cadence disappeared as well. From a motion standpoint, it looked exactly like all the other video that was shot at 29.97. I was able to work with all the video on the same timeline, color correct etc. Rendering to standard NTSC DVD came out perfectly.

I am not sure if there was something weird with this file because of the mystery setting change or what. But all's well that ends well I guess!

It's not possible for the 2:3:3:2 cadence to disappear if you don't remove pulldown. Leaving it in place is exactly what would cause the possible motion stutter.

But, if you're happy with the results you got, all is well.
