emergency help - PIX 240 with SLog and Small HD HDMI problem?

I just arrived for a job tomorrow morning. My first job using Slog into a PIX 240 to record 422 Pro Res. I have a SmallHD EVF because we will be outside so I'm pretty sure that means my SDI out (monitor out) is incapacitated because I have switched to HDMI. I was planning to record out to the PIX from the HD SDI A plug. We'll be shooting 1080 23.98P.

However the client just told me that their experience and a sound devices tech has told them they have to record out using the SDI out (monitor out) otherwise they will get some kind of interlace problems . Also they need to record out at PSF whereas the Small HD needs (as I recall ) the 59.94 signal.

So its kind of a double whammy.

What gives here? Isn't it possible to shoot SLOG to a PIX with an HDMI EVF? Does somebody have their information wron g?

Set the F3 to record S-Log 4:2:2 from the dual link (SDI A) port. Set the Pix video menu to record Same As video input. On the F3, set the output to HDMI and pull-down. I do this all the time and never have experienced a problem. This is the SD recommended way of recording 23.98 to the Pix.

Yes, do not use monitor out to record. And just take your audio to the camera and via SDI to Pix to avoid audio delay.

Thanks - I've asked this on 2 forums and everyone (as I expected has agreed to use the A port) We just shot a test and the client is going to blow it up and look for aliasing or interlace problems. But I have a further question about this:

Its a 2 camera shot and the other camera is recording from the A output (also using an HDMI EVF) onto a Ki-Pro and recording to 23.98P.

I can record the same way by setting the PIX to 23.98 or as was suggested by Ned, set the PIX to "same as Video input" In that case it records 59.94 with pulldown - which is how the HDMI has to be set for the EVF.

Will we be screwed by having the 2 cameras record differently?

What are the consequences of recording 59.94 w/pulldown

Is there a problem with the PIX recording 23.98 from a 59.94 signal?

I'm pretty weak on these issues I confess. How does the deck change the signal from 59.94 to 23.98P?

Thanks folks. DVXUser to the rescue.

Why do you have to record different? Record to the KPM out of A port at 23.98 and the EVF out of HDMI at 59.94. You will be still be recording 24p.

What would be interesting is to see whether there is any difference between SD ProRes and KP Mini ProRes images. There shouldn't be a difference, but I have long ago learned never to say "it should work."

What you need to know is, if the camera is set to 1080 HQ 24p, the "A" port is out-putting A 24 Psf signal not a interlaced signal. If you set to 1080 or 720 60i it will be interlaced. The "A" port outputs whatever the camera is set to. If you set the monitor out, to 60i pull down and set camera to 24p (psf), you will get 24 PSF out of "A" regardless of what you set in monitor output (PSF or Pulldown 60i) That only affects the monitor out not "A".

So in answer to your question leave it set to "Same as Input" and you will record a 24PSF signal, not a 60i with pull-down. When you need to use a VF, use the SDI or HDMI and set it to 60i pull-down. Its just a matter of whether or not your VF can do 60i and PSF. Prob only 60i.

Thanks everyone. We recorded some tests and as i was second camera, I let the first camera team shoot and interpret the tests while i got some much needed shut-eye. In the AM they concluded you were all correct (and as I had planned from the beginning) and we recorded from the SDI A out with PIX sent to same as input. I'll run my own tests later this week just for my own edification. I don't know where their AC (who was a bright competent guy) had the idea that you needed to record from SDI monitor out, though he swears it was from Sound Devices. Sometimes stories change in the retelling though.

If you shoot at 23.98 and 59.94 and intend to edit them together, you will create a monster downstream that will be very difficult and painful!
If it comes to it, I'd forsake the external recording rather than mixing.
