Embarking On A New Hvx 200 Adventure

We are in pre-production for our first feature to be shot with the HVX200.

We will be using the following camera and editing station:

Panasonic HVX 200 with P2 card
Final Cut Studio

Knowing there are numerous options (straight high definition, 24P, etc.), we want to make the right choice in regard to post-production workflow, to give us as many options in exhibition and distribution.

We would like to be able to perform the following:

  • Be able to have a theatrical distribution (utilizing a regular 35mm print along with a high definition version for theaters with this capability).

  • Have a compatible print and disc for entry into film festivals (giving the widest possible marketing choice)—35mm or high definition (or both).

  • Be able to have a DVD version for home/retail marketing purposes with high definition as a possibility.

We realize that there are many settings, and I don’t want to risk a problem in how we shoot with the camera and how we edit in regard to codec, etc.

We would greatly appreciate any help in guiding us as to what settings are best to accomplish our mission.

If I were you (and I will be in the same boat soon), I would shoot in 720p24PN, and here's why:

- if you are hoping for transfer to 35mm, you will have the best source in terms of frame rate;
- since you are shooting on P2, you will be able to record the most HD footage this way;
- you can take advantage of all the variable frame rates that the camera has to offer.

There are many pros and cons to each combination of resolution and frame rate, this is just my $.02 based on what you want to do. If you search these forums you will find many differing opinions.

Also, consider getting a 35mm adapter if you have the budget. I had never used one until last weekend, and now I really can't imagine shooting without it.
