Eliminating Ambient Background Sound In Video

Hi all,

I recorded a seminar in a medium sized room of 18 people. The air con & fan were on during the seminar & when I uploaded my video to Adobe Premiere Pro 1.5, I could hear a faint hissing sound coming from the air-con & fan.

I have Adobe Audition. How to I use Audition to remove this background ambient sound as much as possible & import to edited sound back into Premiere?

Also, during the middle of the seminar recording, there were workers outside the seminar room hammering loudly away outside & the banging is easily heard in the seminar recording. Is there anyway I can totally remove the banging sound, & be able to retain the person speaking?

Please help as I'm not very good in eliminating background sounds. Thanks very much in advance.

Andrew

Two ways I know of:

Cheap - Take a snippet of audio that only has the background noise you want to rid yourself of...invert it's waveform and then loop and sync it with your original audio file. The negative waveform when synced will negate only the noisy background.

Expensive - Buy SoundSoap, it truly rocks and for only 99 bucks, is a necessity if you're going to be recording in adverse conditions more than this one time.

Even simpler - use the capture function for noise reduction highlighting a section of the audio track with the background noise. Once capture go to noise reduction. Preview, change settings until you are satified and activate.

Thanks guys for all your suggestions. I do appreciate them.

I also did some experimentation in Adobe Audition & managed to reduce much of the video clip's background hissing sounds. I opened the specific .avi file in Audition (File=>Open Audio From Video), clicked on the "Effects" tab in the top left corner of the interface, expanded the "Noise Reduction" menu to see all sub-menus, double-clicked on "Hiss Reduction", a separate window opens & I select "Standard Hiss Reduction" found in the Presets window, made sure the "Remove Hiss" option is selected instead of "Keep Only Hiss" & pressed "OK" button. After that, I saved the file as .wav & imported this .wav into Premiere Pro. I then dragged this .wav file into Premiere's Timeline just under the videoclip where the audio should go. It was tedious, but it got the job done pretty well.

I compared the original video & audio clip & the modified video & audio clip & most of the background ambient sounds were effectively removed.

Actually I am a total newbie when using Audition, but a little trying on my own got the results. Are any of you familiar with Audition?

I second that. Suondsoap really shine's for the exact purpose mentioned here.
