el cheapo camera audio options...

hey gang, this is WAY off topic. but i have a client who has a cheapo sony hdr sr1 camera and he wants to use a shotgun/boom with it.

i told him to buy a real camera. but that didnt fly. so im wondering if any of you all have dealt with this camera before? the biggest road block is that he camera has no audio level control. so the rode video mic, with its mini jack and 3 position volume control seemed logical...

any thoughts?
 
You will find many threads about this in the audio board. Beachtek and Juiced Link make solutions which have phantom power, audio controls, and feed to a mini-jack input.

Beware, you could go to a lot of expense and if the camera audio circuits are crap, you will record crap. He might (?) be better off to record to a Zoom or Tascam and patch it together in post which is what the dslr crowd does.
