I watched the trailer for the movie Garden State, and at teh very beginning of the trailer was Braff sitting in an airplane, totally still while everyhting around him moved really fast...now I've always wondered how you do this...can you do it with Vegas 5? If so how?

Re: Effect in Garden State

To explain how is probably a little more than can be done in a post like this. It'll require masking and multiple layers of video, at a minimum. You can, in theory, do it in Vegas (and probably in actual fact, too), though dedicated effects/compositing software will be better at it.

Re: Effect in Garden State

Like David said, this effect can be done in Vegas. However, I would not place emphasis on which program can do the effect, but rather what needs to be done during production so that all the elements can come together in whatever composting/NLE you use to do it. The quality of those elements will be the major determinant as to whether a specific program can achieve the effect.

Re: Effect in Garden State

The technique is actually pretty simple. You have the main actor stay very still while all the extras move at normal speed. Film about 5 minutes of this and then speed it up in post. When the footage is speeded up it won't affect the actor who was still, but all the moving extras will be speeded up.

Re: Effect in Garden State

oh my god....ususally I think of a way to do editing effects without some expensive program...and what you said Barry, I can't believe I never thought of that...common sense, god I feel stupid.

Re: Effect in Garden State

Hey, the reason I know is because I was an extra--walking around endlessly in a scene where this effect was used. :)
