How well does this lens work for cine stuff? Does a follow focus work well with it? Is there enough room to turn the barrel? Like I know one of the big problems with SLR lenes for cine work is that if you turn the barrel like 1/4" it can change the focus distance dramatically but some lenses are better at this than others.

Along the same line of questions, how is the Canon 24-70mm F2.8L for focus pulling? Ridiculously short throw like the Nikon 24-70mm F2.8G? Does it change length as you zoom (making it unusable for Matte Boxes and stage filters?). I'll for sure spring for the 7D/60D if it has 24P/30P so just thinking ahead.

The Nikon 24-70mm F2.8G is about the best still photo zoom I've used BTW, but impossible for focus pulling. If someone could rehouse this zoom, give it a longer throw and some decent marks, it would be a kick ass light zoom for cinema.

another thing to remember is Canon L lenses don't have hard stops on the focus ring. The ring will still turn even if you've hit infinity or macro. It's not a total deal breaker...just something to keep in mind.

Ah, never mind. Found pictures showing the 24-70mm and 24-105mm both extend their lengths a lot as they zoom. Phhht.

Minolta 28-70mm F2.8 "G" lens doesn't do this which is probably why it was sold re-housed as a cinema lens by someone (wish I could remember who).

If you leave the lens hood attached to the 24-70, the barrel will not extend past the end of it. In other words, you can press the lens hood up to the matte box and the barrel will not go past it.

The 24-105, however, will change lengths because the lens hood is mounted on the moving part of the barrel.

This isn't entirely true - on my 24-105, there's a lot of resistance on the focus ring when I hit infinity. Sure, I can keep turning it if I force it, but I get physical feedback that I've hit infinity.

its REALLY a short throw though, and there is a bit of lag int he ring between the turning of the ring and when the "widget" engages the focus elements.

the 24-105 is a tough one to use. even when manual focusing for taking photos.
