I just got a copy of Avid Pro Education 4.5.1 what is the difference between the retail copy of avid pro 4.5.1 and my copy? and could I get HD 5.0 for $50???

thanks :)

I'm almost positive that you can still get the upgrade to HD for $50 even on an edu version. I have been wrong before, so maybe MichaelP will jump in, or maybe you can just call sales at Avid and ask them.

As far as difference, the edu version doesn't come with 3rd party software, and you can't use it to make money. The Xpress Pro software is the same.

The diffrence is none of the third party software such as Soprenson Squeeze, SmartSound, and other items. You can use it all you want to make money - there are no restriction in that sense, and you can upgrade to any later version for the same cost.

Has that changed? I thought that previously you were not allowed to use educational versions of software for profit.

Just curious.

Some applications in the industry have that c lause, such as 3D applications, etc. But I am not aware of any restrictions on the education pricing of Xpress Pro.

Actually, MichaelP, you're quite wrong. there is a stipulation when purchasing the EDU version that it cannot be used for commercial work ( call that profit making non-educational use). I just purchased 30 seats for the University where I teach and that proviso was definitely listed. It's also mentioned on the Avid website. I got a full version of Avid and upgraded to HD as soon as it came out.
As far as transfering registration, yes, you can as long as you're willing to pay the extra $$$.

I stand corrected. Let me check the details with the education group. I wonder what happens when a student graduates - is there a "I am no longer a student" upgrade or does that only happen when a new release is available?

Interesting question b/c i'll be in that boat. But how would anyboyd know? Or are you guys just going on an ethcial basis?

I'm confused. Are you saying that when you buy the academic version, you are forever stuck with academic liscencing? No matter if you upgrade or not, you are never able to use it as a professional? That does not sound right. I have vegas and adobe premiere, that I bought both as academic versions, when new versions were released I was able to upgrade to the professional versions without restrictions. That sounds rather odd that avid would not let you do this.

You are able to upgrade to any version which is no longer under academic license. The issue I was raising is if you were graduating (this no longer a student) and did not upgrade to a non academic licensed version, what was the policy for doing work for hire?

I am checking internally with Avid on this one.
