Education Version of Final Cut Studio 2

I have decided to bite the bullet and get FC Studio 2. I currently run FCE 4 on a 2008 iMac, and shoot with a DVX 100b.

My questions are:

Should I buy the education version and save money now but relinquish my ability to upgrade (for a reduced fee) later? I know a teacher who is willing to make the purchase for me and save me about 50%.

-or-

Should I pay for the full version and worry that Apple will upgrade the package in a year?

The latter question is the one I'm concerned with. If Apple upgrades soon after I make my purchase how important is it that I upgrade? Do any of you know if Apple is planning a new release anytime soon?

Thanks in advance!!!

If you aren't using this for educational purposes but plan on using it to make money, buy the full version and roll the dice. Nobody knows when Apple will release something except Apple, and they aren't talking. If you use the Educational version to make money you're violating the terms of the educational license.

Stay legit. Get the full, real version (unless you're a student working on student projects).

There is no limitation on using the academic version to produce revenue at all.

The only requirement is that you have to qualify under the academic guidelines

Once you quality, you can make as much money as wish.

In long run, buying academic doesn't make sense economically.

Everyone I have talked to, from professors to Apple store employees say there is no difference b/w the academic version and full retail. You just have to be a student to purchase it.

Why wouldn't it make sense in the long run to purchase the academic version?

If you're in school you totally have to right to buy it- it's really that simple.

Because when you're no longer a student and FCP3 or 4 comes out, the academic version of FCP2 doesn't apply for the much cheaper "upgrade" price..

It doesn't matter if you are a student or not if FCS is upgraded.

You still have to buy a new full version of retail or academic if are still a student.

And Dick, what are you calling illegal?

I'm not certain what you are referring to.

I know, I was saying that owning just the academic version in college doesn't make you applicable to the discounted "upgrade" version of the non-academic FCS3 when you are no longer in school. It says it right on their site. "about the upgrades" http://store.apple.com/us_smb_78313/product/MA886Z/A

If you are not entitled to an academic version (i.e., student or teacher), or also the license only allows use of the software for academic purposes, and you use the s/w for any other purpose you are violating the license agreement. The OP said "I know a teacher who is willing to make the purchase for me", which implies he (the OP) is not entitled to purchase the s/w on his own merit, implying he intends to use the s/w in violation of the license.

That is the matter I was getting at. I think I will save money over the short term by buying the academic version but in the long run will loose the benefit of getting support and cheaper upgrades for new versions.

As for other comments regarding unethical practices, if I really didn't care about being unethical I'd Limewire it and steal someone elses' wireless broadband to get it for free.

For half off in this economy? Academic sounds real good. I used FCP academic for years and made a lot of money in the process. And Who the hell gives a damn if you're making money? They have your money already, what are they gonna do audit you, wanna see your books? Doubt it. The way I see it, you bought it, it's yours and you can do what you want with it. It's so easy to get any program for free I'm suprised they don't allow students to get upgrades. Just my 2
