I bought a DVX100AP from Cine-Audio (Panasonic Authorized Dealer) in Edmonton in the fall and it has done nothing but collect dust. I hoped to dabble in filmmaking, but it just never happened.
The camera is brand new, with maybe a few hours of just playing withit in the house (its never left the house). I also bought the following accessories (all bought in the last three months), and as the camera, never used them _at all_.

1) Panasonic DVX100AP (paid $4667.00 CDN + Tax at Cine-Audio).

2) Panasonic 5400mah battery (paid $175.00 CDN + Tax at Cine-Audio)

3) Sennheiser EW112PG2-A Wireless Microphone (Paid $629.00 CDN)

4) Azden SGM-2X shotgun microphone (paid $350.00 CDN).

5) The DVX Book and DVD from dvxuser.com.

6) A professional hardcase for the DVX100 with antistatic foam, and spots to put accessories.

Despite the fact this stuff is all new, I am not expecting what I paid for them. Nor do I want to entertain silly offers which usually come from tire kickers anyways ;P

I am accepting offers, so if anyone is seriously interested in this stuff... let me know.

Thanks !

Michelle

I have a production manager friend in Singapore who works in the film industry there. She was going to move here to show me the ropes, and things sorta fizzled for the time being. I hate to have the thing sit for too long without being used... I'd rather put the money elsewhere.

Re: EDMONTON - New DVX100AP & Accessories 4 SA

I'm positive that you can still make films despite your friend not being there. You have a good list of gear and I would hate to see you sell it. You need someone to show you the ropes? Don't sell it, used it first at least. I'm sure you have some sort of film school or know someone around your area thats into filmmaking. It makes me sad when I hear someones going to sell their equipment or dream because of something minor. I started with little help and well, let's see what happens for 2005. If you want to sell your equipment then thats fine. I just hate to see people quit. I'm more than welcome to offer any advice you need.

Re: EDMONTON - New DVX100AP & Accessories 4 SA

I agree, every so often it can become a mind f*#k of a business. I know I've thought about quiting and taking a job at the quicky mart. But really. I'm sure there's more of a reason that you spend that much cash on all that equipment other than a small wim on a new hobby. I'm postive that you need to meet with some people who have the same interest. Film school or broadcast school would definetly be a benifit. I mean where would we be if Peter jackson gave up just cause he didn't hit it mainstream til he was nearly 40. And unless your dying for the cash you have everything that you need for a basic film. Go Rent Napoleon Dynamite and appreciate what can be done on a low budget. I think I watched it 3 times this weekend

P.s. I live in Edmonton Too. And although it suck's I know that there are groups of wierd theatre types that alway's want to try and make films. No offense to the wierd theatre people. If you want to talk about your options without giving up than I'm sure I could meet you one day for a chat. Just P.M. me

Wow... never expected replies like this. :)

What got me started with this, was my friend who was the production manager and doing a movie in Singapore.. and me watching the updates www.cagesmovie.com. I became fascinated with the whole idea of filmmaking... even something simple... doing it from start to finish. I've seen some movies done on cheap dv camcorders before, and they were done so well. She actually recommended the DVX to me since they used it to do some interviews with Cages and were impressed with it.

HAHA :) I thought I was the only one who thought that. I have a lot of theatre friends and yes 95% are weird.

Michelle, so you still going to sell your gear or give it another try? I don't know who Nick is but I'm sure he'll definetly help you out. If you film it, they will come..., okay that sounded cheezy. Keep that spark alive! I got your back! Plus you can always come here for any advice. ;D

Re: EDMONTON - New DVX100AP & Accessories 4 SA

MIchelle - The other thing is your gonna take a heavy loss with having bought the stuff in canada. The $5000 cnd that you spend on the cam changes over to 4000 american. A better way to put it is the camera is roughly $3400-USD brand knew, which only converts over to $4145 CND and you'd have to drop your price further seeing as it's used, even if slightly- so your going to end up with over a $1000 dollar loss on the camera alone. So make sure you Stop and really think about your options before you begin to entertain any offers from any one for your gear.

As far as loss.. I'd probably want like $4000 CDN for everything. Considering all this stuff has warranty, and unused, I think its reasonable. The wireless mic is one of the best, and pretty expensive.

When I bought it, I considered purchasing it from a US Dealer. I know what you're saying, and perhaps many here feel you can use North America as one market, but I disagree. I bought that camera in Canada, and locally (and paid more) for one important reason.... warranty. $3400.00 if paying with a credit card, you'll pay about 1.27 for each US dollar right now... thats $4320. When it hits the Canadian border, you'll pay another 7%.. that brings it to $4622.00.. if you had to use UPS, or FEDEX or most other couriers... you can add at least another $100 for brokerage fees (which most of these guys charge).

Now, you have a camera that you can forget about going to the local dealer for support, or assistance if you have a problem with the camera. No personalized service... you always risk customer service and warranty when buying from the US, and having it shipped up here.

If buying from the US, I ended up paying $4600 for a camera that up here is $5000, bottom line, if it doesn't work and needs to be repaired under warranty... and Panasonic doesn't honor it, OR, I have to ship it to somewhere in the US... and then have to deal with Canada Customs forms so I don't get have to pay hundreds of dollars again when it comes back into the country because they think I just bought it... its not worth the hassle... let me lay the extra $500 or $600 more in Canada for the peace of mind. I knew if I had to return it, I'd be kicking myself for the hassle in sending it back to the US.

There's not a store in Canada that will match a USD price from an American Mail order place, or store. If this were so, then there couldnt' be a price difference like there is between countries.

I appreciate everyones opinion, and I do agree with many of the comments. Much of this is personal choice, and there are people out there who care about local customer service, and knowing 100% that you won't have a problem with warranty on a piece of equipment that costs thousands of dollars.

btw... with the comments here, if it doesn't sell.... I'll still have a smile on my face, because I still may pursue something in filmmaking :)

Thanks

Michelle

This is important to consider Michelle. If the money is not immediately important, put a little time in. I'm sure you will be glad you did. I am almost certain that you will be able to get pretty close to the same amount for the equipment in the fall as today. So if it's financially viable - Hang on to it and hang in there!

Re: EDMONTON - New DVX100AP & Accessories 4 SA

Re: EDMONTON - New DVX100AP & Accessories 4 SA

btw..

Using the cheapest price (from an authorized Panasonic Dealer in Canada for the DVX100 (which is $4200.00 and right in there for the price in USD and purchased from the US), and I got the cheapest deals I could find on the mics, this all works out to $6000.00 CDN.

I think $4000.00 (knocking off $2000.00 CDN) for this (new and unused) equipment is reasonable.

Re: EDMONTON - New DVX100AP & Accessories 4 SA

Michelle, it's not as bad as that for buying equipment, I purchased all my gear from B&H photo, and often buy from EVS. I picked up a 5 year warrenty from Mack with my camera which is honoured at any panny authorized service centre, which edmonton has. So I feel pretty good about buying from B&H or Evs, Any major purchase should be reviewed and thought out as you did, I looked at Cine audio and visual, in fact that's the first place I laid my hands on a DVX but they didn't really know what they were talking about and there service was crap. I'm sure you'll be able to sell everything on this board, remember to research and use paypal, or something for protecting your sale.

$4000 is reasonable, it still sucks to have to take a loss though, but someone will get a good deal

Re: EDMONTON - New DVX100AP & Accessories 4 SA

Hey Nick... where did you get the extended warranty? Mack? Where is that?
Also.. what courier did you use to get the stuff to Canada? So many of them rip Canadians off now with brokerage charges.

Thanks,

Michelle

Hi guys,

I'm in touch with Michelle for the equipment.
Anyone knows about US customs taxes when receiving used electronics from Canada ?

Thanks a lot for any info,
Ulisses

Re: EDMONTON - New DVX100AP & Accessories 4 SA

I don't know what brokerage charges you mean, I just had everything shipped UPS, they collect the GST for the goverment when they deliver. which is what I'd pay anywhere in Canada anyway's. Mack is a company out of the states which provides supplemental warrenty coverage on all kinds of electronics, The cost will vary depending on price, and can only be added within 30 day's of purchase. Many of the internet site's list the warrenty as an additional recommended purchase. Ulisses, to the best of my( I may be wrong) knowledge a private sale isn't taxable, even between borders. I imagine the equipment will be inspected by customs, Just make sure the boxes have the additional insurance to cover any damage or loss in the shipping process.
