EDL question

I am doing a project and due to lack of hard drive space I am forced to edit in 5 different projects, export, clean the drive then load all five into a sequence for final export.

The thing that worries me is if the person I am doing the project for wants to make a change at the last minute I am basically screwed because I would have to recapture and assemle again.

Will the EDL thing help me out in this. Is there a way that the EDL would streamline the process of recaputuring and assembling in this situation? If so how?

I don't rally know why you have to work in five different projects becuase of limited drive space. You can work in 5 sections (or reels in film speak) within the same project with only footage needed for each seqeunce. As you get closer to locked picture, you can alwasys consolidate the seqeunce with handles and delete the old media leaving space for the additional material.

The easiest thing for you to do now would be to make a new uber project and import all the bins from the 5 differnt projects into it. DOn't do EDL's. The most basic scenario would be a new project with 5 bins, each having the seqeunce from the original 5. Then a 6th bin could contain the entire sequence comprised of the 5 sequences which would be your whole movie.

I just found out about that consolidate feature on the tutorial disk and I think thats what I am going to do. I didnt even know about that before.

One more quick question Michael...I did the consolidation thing and it worked great...it turning about 110gb into 10.5gb, thanks. Now I have two additional drives to my C:. On the D: is where I do my work and E: is where I put the consolidated files. But there are still some files left in the OMFI folder of the D:. I erased all media files on the D: using the media tool in Avid so I am not sure what those files are or if they are needed by the consolidated files. I would really like to completely wipe that D: and continue working as you outlined. Do I need those files??

I would rename the OMFI MediaFIle folder to something else (or just put an "x" in front of the name) and launch the application. If your sequence doesn't need the files, then you can feel free to trash them.

If ya don't need anything in that folder, just trash it.
It'll rebuild a new one for ya when ya launch and capture a clip.
