Editing / Working with MTS files After Effects and Vegas - Choppy after AE Edits

Hello, I have been tearing my hair out trying to find a solution to my problem.

I have been editing and working with clips straight out of my GH13, using the blackout powell 24p settings. I can import these clips into Vegas and work with them no problem, no playback jitters or slowdown to my eyes.

I am also using After Effects CS5, and I can import and do ram previews of the clips that playback just fine. Everything I do in AE looks okay when I do previews of it.

However, I'm having problems after I render my clips out of After Effects. I am adding different effects and movement to green screen clips, and then do a render queue with the default settings. When I import that clip into vegas after editing it, it plays back super choppy and laggy.

I've tried several different settings on my render, I've used the default 23.976 frame rate, and everything else to default. I've also tried the 30 frame rate, still plays back choppy in Vegas or Premiere CS5.

I'm thinking I'm missing something here, and wondering if anyone has any ideas or tips?

I've been rendering the footage as an .avi in After Effects, if I render it as a quicktime I can view it just fine in Vegas or Premiere. It seems like I am losing some quality going to quicktime vs avi I'd imagine, the filesize is much smaller.

Playing uncompressed HD AVIs (that is the standard "lossless" default in AE) will not playback on any system that does not have a pretty fast disk array (RAID). There is simply too much data for "normal" SATA 3 bandwidth.

You would have to configure a RAID array or pick a codec that your machine can handle.

Thanks ninetto, wondering if you have any tips on codecs for viewing and editing? I have been messing around with settings, found a few formats that look okay to my eye that I can view and edit without lag, but I am certain the video is being compressed enough to lose detail. I guess I need to sacrifice something to be able to get some work done. Definitely open to any suggestions.

My system specs on my laptop are average at best, Intel Core i7 Q720 @ 1.60 ghz, 4 gigs ram, 64-bit Windows 7.

I've been rendering to quicktime dnxhd, and importing those clips into Vegas to edit. It might not be ideal but, at least I can view and edit at the same time without the lag. I'm then rendering them to Sony AVC for web clips, and AVI for my other uses. Just thought I'd post it, in case this is a bad way of going about things, and someone might have some helpful info. Basically what I need to do is, make HD clips for youtube and vimeo, and also HD high quality clips for DVD and live video projection for shows.
