editing video on a power book G4

I have been editing from my powerbook since I bought the 100b and
I have recently been told by someone who runs the television department at
Brooklyn college that when I import footage from my camera that it gets compressed when it comes in through the firewire cable and that I need a different firewire cable that runs to a box that will give me better resolution and thus a better result for doing greenscreen. He implied that this was a problem specific to powerbooks.
Has anyone heard about this problem? and or this supposed box that costs around $200.00 His class was just starting so I wasn't able to get more specific info. Anyone?

Yep, the video is already compressed when it hits the tape and some resolution is lost. That's just the nature of DV. Transferring the video to your mac via firewire won't compress it any further. Unfortunately, there isn't a $200 box that will bring the original resolution back, although it would be cooler if there was.

I think he talking about a analog to digital converter. There was a time when people liked the fact that some quality loss softened the 4:1:1 color sampling to produce better greenscreen keys. You can do all that in post in a more controlled manner and certainly capturing firewire provides you with the best quality from the camera.

And in case you didn't get it from the above posts, there is absolutely no difference capturing via firewire to a powerbook vs. capturing via firewire to any other computer.
