Editing Systems

Hey all, love the forum. You guys are the reason I've just bought myself a dvx100. Love it. Best decision I've ever made.

Now here lies my problem...I have always used PC's and Premier for my editing and was happy. Until I've moved into an office, which has mac's in and the owner of the Mac's is asking me advice on which NLE system I should use. I've told the guy that MAC seems to the be way to go and I have found out that his MAC's need a serious upgrade.

So rather than this guy upgrading the mac he asked if he should go to PC, since that's what I've used.

Which system do you all think is the best for editing?

Thanks

Jimbo

The one you know how to use. My grandmother all ways told me the fastest way is the way you know. Depending on what you are going to be editing is going to determine what you need. Does he edit HD footage or only need SD ? If he does edit HD what camera and Format ?

Final Cut Pro.

Put me and my Macbook Pro against any other editing system. I started on Media 100, moved to Premier, hated Vegas, moved onto Avid, and finally saw the light with FCP.

Wow that's a very arrogant statement.
Do you also think people should dress like you and look like you too ? Just because FCP is the best editor for you doesn't mean that it is for him. That's why there as so many different ones on the market.

Please try and give an answer that at least explains why you thinks it's better. I don't think he going to go to his boss and say "korimickster online says to go Mac so it has to be best".

Why didn't you like premiere, Vegas or Avid ?

Thank you all for your advice. I am now going the Mac route. Thanks.

Noooooooooooooooooo

Kidding. It would be good if you had access to a pc and mac to download some trial versions of the various editors so you could get a bit of a feel for them before making your decision. All have their advantages/disadvantages

I've still got my home PC, which I've been trying out Adobe, Avid, Liquid, and Vegas. I do own a MAC laptop and have tried FCP and I do like it better than the others. I was just wondering what other people on the forum thought about it.

Thanks though.

Ah, I've used Edius before. It's a nice peice of software. Out of all of the PC stuff I prefered that and Premier.

Thanks again, Jason.

The software is just a TOOL, and there are PLENTY of good options on both the PC and Mac side.

I personally have an Avid Media Composer AND a Final Cut HD system.

Most SD projects I edit on the AVID, ALL HD projects get edited on the MAC, because, fo me, FCPro just GETS it with the P2 workflow.

YMMV

Chill, man. If someone is asking for my opinion, I'll give it to them.

Premiere was nowhere near as stable as FCP. More than 2 composited layers and it crashes. Vegas feels too cheap, had plugin compatibility issues. Wont talk to other programs well. Avid takes too long to do anything. Too many workarounds. They make things more complicated than they have to be.

Final Cut Pro works seamless with the entire Final Cut Studio. Every part of my editing system is made by Apple, so I can send metadata to and from project files in different programs with no loss. It is incredibly stable and works the way an editor should.

Thanks

Thanks

Thanks for that. I've heard that Final Cut Studioworks well together. I'm also getting Shake so I guess that'll run just as well with Final Cut.

Korimickster, what Apple system do you use?

Thanks,

Jimbo

Macbook Pro 1.83 GHz with 2GB RAM.

Mac OSX 10.4.7

I'm not saying that this is the absolute best, but I am saying that I am extremely pleased with my system. It has been worth absolutely every penny.

With that do u get any lag when editing or rendering on the MacBook Pro?

Me/the business is looking to get a Mac Pro system, duel monitor setup, 500 gig hard drive etc

Thanks

Jimbo

No lag whatsoever, but rendering speeds are going to vary for you.

Color grading with Magic Bullet takes some time, but I use Motion for real time graphics and rendering is a thing of the past. I can only imagine how nice it must be to have a hooked up Mac Pro.

Another advantage to FCP is the wide spread adoption of the platform within the industry. It's got to be over 50 percent of the market.... and growing more than anythign else. That being said.. you'll get some work because you know FCP.. editing for other people and that's sweet.

As you can also tell people are passionate about their FCP and their macs

its all up to the user, u can get the same results with all the systems....yes a lot of ppl dont consider premiere an editing tool like FCP. Its becasue they are stuck up, lol. I've been editing premiere for years, finished my first documentary, and u cant tell that it was premire, fcp, vegas, avid or whatever.
go with what you know.

hmm I personally think the way some nle s work suits different people, which is a good thing as its much eaiser to find something that will fit you better in the current market. For me its Final Cut studio, the way my brain works seems to flow with it much easier than the others, of course the seemless integration of all the components from FC studio was a big plus.

Premiere, After Effects, Photoshop work seamlessly together for me on my old piece of crap system. As adobe products should work together.

Like everyone else said, go with what you know. And if you are going to be running the macs on a domain with a mac server you might want to go the pc route. Macs arent really network machines, apple will tell you differently, but they are never as stable as pcs on a network.
Im a network admin for 12 school districts, two are mac school, they are my only real problem schools...
