Editing Question (Transitions)?

I hope that I am asking this in the right place as it does not specifically refer to any particular editing software. I am in the market for a new editing package. Right now I am using very inexpensive software but it does get the job done, just not very fancy. What software with give me the latest transitions for example like used in commercials, movies and music videos where the transition goes to an overexposed frame like a flash or swoosh then back to the proper exposure and onto the next clip. I hope I am describing it properly but I see this used a lot instead of a normal fade or straight cut! Also what program do you guys recommend, I am on a PC?
Thanks for all your help!

Re: Editing Question (Transitions)?

I use Sony's Vegas.  But Mr. Jimerson is right, the less you use the better.  Straight cuts with a couple of overlapping transitions and very few fades will work.  If you have "too" many effects, it looks amaturish and your audience will look at the effects rather than the message.

Almost forgot, pop in a current movie DVD and play it slowly with the sound off, make a note of the use of straight cuts, transititions, and fades. You should find that majority are straight cuts.

Re: Editing Question (Transitions)?

Depends on what you're editing, though. If you're doing photo montages, people LOVE those transitions and will get horribly bored if all there is are cross-dissolves...

Re: Editing Question (Transitions)?

Viperforce,

To achieve the transition you are talking about, follow these instructions:

Create a white color matte. Make it about 15 frames to a second long. Place it on the video track above your main footage. Set the transparency to off or zero at the beginning of the matte and keyframe it to full transparency or 100% at the end. Basically what you are doing is getting full white that fades to total transparency to reveal the footage underneath inside a second. It gives the impression of a flash.

This is just off the top of my head so you might want to change the length of time to suit your taste. If you can't create color mattes in your NLE, then use a graphics program like Photoshop or something simple that came with your computer to create a white graphic sized the same as your video frame and import it into your editor.

Make sense? If not, let me know.
