editing on tv

Hi-
I've been doing my editing on my regular vga monitor, then I burn it on a dvd to watch on my tv to get a better idea of what it looks like.

The thought occurs to me there are gadgets that send your pc signal to the tv. Has anyone tried that?

If for some reason that doesn't work or has drawbacks, anyone recommend some cheaper broadcast monitors?

thanks

Most NLEs will send the preview picture out through Firewire. You can run it through your camera and into the TV.

It's essential to do it this way if you want to do accurate color correction.

Which NLE are you using. I recommend taking firewire out to a DV in enabled camcorder and then take the AV outputs from that in your TV.

A professional video monitor will give the best results - something from the Sony BVM (Broadcast) or PVM (Professional) range would be good, but tend to be pricy. 2nd hand monitors must be chosen with care, as they can be quite knackered and useless. A TV will work too, but insure it is correctly set, colour and contrast wise. You will also loose benefits such as underscan.

mmm or juba,

do either of you know how to send to tv via firewire with final cut pro? like what are the adjustments or preferences I would use to do this? any feedback would be great.

thnx

Set up firewire to a camera and then analog out of camera into TV/Monitor.
In FCP do a view -> Refresh AV device
Set Video and audio (under view menu) to output to firewire.
Set view -> Show all frames

I use Adobe Premiere Pro 1.5 - I've used the capture screen to send finished footage to my dvx to record it on minidv. So I just use the cables that attach my camera to the tv, and at least I'll get the edited footage on the tv? It sounds like is the cheapest way (as I have all the equipment) while being a bit of a hassle - hooking up all those cables.

I was thinking of something that took the whole video signal from the pc and output it to the tv, so I can do editing directly on the tv - using the tv as a pc monitor.

This comes up a lot. You don’t want to do it that way.

Images meant for a computer monitor should not be displayed on a TV, for several reasons. A TV is of far lower resolution than a computer monitor, and the image will look very bad. Also, a computer and a TV display a different color space, and computer monitors can display many colors that TVs can’t. An image meant for a computer monitor will not be accurate on a TV.

You want to preview out through firewire, because once it goes through your camera/deck, it's a signal that’s meant for a TV (or NTSC/PAL monitor). That will give you the accuracy you need to do your editing and color correction.

PC>firewire>camera>RCA>RF Modulator>Really old TV

Oh yeah! I'm rocking the early '90s Magnavox, baby:thumbsup:
