Editing native MTS files from AF-100

I just got back into town from our first official shoot and I see a lot of threads here about people converting the MTS files to another format before editing. Before I start editing here, I really would like to know if there is any harm in editing the native MTS files straight from the SD card which I have been doing. It seems to work just find on my end and plays in real time so I want to make sure I'm not losing quality or running into unforseen issues by not converting it into another format before I get too deep into post here. Do only FCP users have to convert or am I missing something here?

FYI: We would render the edited MTS videos (with other sources) out with H.264 for BD and MPEG-2 for DVD using all Adobe CS4/CS5 software on PCs.

What NLE and on what platform ?

I would absolutely NOT edit direct off the SD card!!!!!!

FWIW..I am editing mts natively in PremPro CS5 (Win 7) from files ingested to my NLE desktop system 24GB / CUDA, MPE. No problems

I didn't mean I edited "straight from the SD card" (which upon re-reading I guess is what it sounded like) I meant I copy the files straight from the SD card onto a local HDD for editing as appose to plugging the camera in for importing or converting files etc... The NLE and platform we're using is Adobe CS4/CS5 products (depending on the workstation) which means Pemier CS4/CS5 on Dell XPS PCs. If you're using native MTS files with CS5 then I'm assuming it's all fine to so what we're already doing. I wanted to double check on the boards before moving forward since there's so much chatter with converting MTS files into QT etc... I'm assuming those posts are from FCP users though... thanks!

I have discovered that I need to "develop " a new little edit and post workflow... and it may affect you as well.

Input welcome from anyone please.

Two day shoot on two different cards.

Each card has exactly the same filenames eg 00001mts, 00002mts etc ... thru to whatever....

(I have my rushes in my Project Bin in two separate folders ie Rushes 1 and Rushes 2) THey were also ingested to the local hard drive (and backup drives ) in that manner as well.

Now the issue here is that in the workflow camera to NLE) ...one needs to be VERY careful and also.... this is going to have an impact when I (we ) come to output an EDL.

P2 did not have the same issue. Every file name was always unique.

Be careful folks.

Thanks Shooter, that's very good to know and something I didn't yet consider. The footage I have from our last shoot is spread over 6 cards so I'm sure I would have the same naming convention issue.
