Editing Monitor questions for my Af100

Hi all, for the past few months i've been trying to figure out which monitor i should use when editing my af100 footage and think ive finally narrowed it down to the following:

Either the dell U2410 or U2311h (which i hear is only a 6 bit panel).

Or recently I've seen a lot of people getting the YAMAKASI CATLEAP Q270. http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-YAMAKAS...1510?pt=Computer_Monitors&hash=item4ab51460d6

There's a lot of variations of it but it looks pretty good. FInally theres also the smaller LG FLATRON IPS236V http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/New-LG-FL...6338?pt=Computer_Monitors&hash=item20b814fb92

I was wondering which you guys would opt for, and if anyone has used any of the above? I have a decent laptop currently and use adobe cs5.5. WOuld use this monitor as both a preview and for some reasonable colour grading for which i think ill be getting either the matrox or spyder for color calibration (i know that the grading wont be as good on a cheaper monitor or anything like a top top profesional broadcast monitor, don't worry. But still it would be nice if i could get it pretty close, so i could then check it on lots of different TVs).

I was also wondering, as the af100 is 8 bit, do i need an 8 bit monitor then? (which would rule out the u2311h). And the yamakasi monitor has a much better resolution than standard 1080 (its 2560X1440), so what effect does this have on editing? Will i be fooled into thinking my stuff looks better/worse then it is? Or does it not influence it? Any advice would be appreciated as always, Thanks

in general, a better resolution will give you advantages in editing your films - you'll have more place for your editing panels, and the preview window, the disadvantage would be the scaling effect on such displays. 1080p will look similar to SD footage on a normal hdtv... i own an iMac, also 27" and i'm currently using it as a Display for my Mac Pro... i put all editing panels on the high resolution screen and the preview on another 27" one with just 1080p... perfect solution for now, but it was also nice to edit just on the iMacs screen - you can watch your footage unscaled or set the resolution to 1080p if you wannna get close to see what your clients will get... as i've seen in some reviews this display will be a great bang for the buck!

Thanks for the reply, so if i use the better resolution though my image will be scaled? And anyone else use any of these ?

yes, it will be scaled from 1920 pixels width to 2560 pixels width - but only in fullscreen mode, if you open your videos without fullscreen mode, they will be displayed 1:1... depends on your player though, but vlc and quicktime does...

Ah I see. Yes as I wanted to use the monitor as a preview screen (with my laptop as the screen for the editing tools) I guess that wont be ideal, if its 1:1 i assume the rest of the space would just be black then or something? Does anyone know if its easy to add a second screen as preview full screen in adobe cs5.5?

This decision is driving me to the brink of insanity! I've now stumbled across a more expensive option but looks alright: EIZO FS2331... i think im going to have to shut my eyes and do eeny miney mo in a second!

Thanks for the fast reply, looks a really good monitor, 12 bit!? Silly question but i see its 16:10, as footage i shoot is 16:9, does that mean if i viewed it on that monitor there would be some small black bars on the sides? Or does it get scaled or something? Thanks

I'm still using my old Panasonic BT-LH2600W for my HD edit monitor & an old Panasonic BT-H1350Y to double check my center cut SD preview.
I have both plasma and LCD client preview monitors.

Uh huh. O.K

I am just wondering how the O.P is intending to connect his laptop to additional monitors because there has been no mention or advice to him in this regard.

Hey Shooter, not to sure how to check the output specs? My video card is a NVIDIA Geforce GTX 470M er 280 CUDA cores and er 1.5 gb ofdedicated video memory if that helps. I have a hdmi output on the back, and then this white output plug on the back, googled it but couldnt find a picture of it, it has like 24 small holes, then a small cross next to it.

Right Click on your monitor space and open Nvidia Panel where you will see the resolutions available.

I f you have a Monitor connected to the dvi connector you will see what rez is recommended.

A 1080p HD monitor is ideal.

Hey yea i did the right click thing, only saw 1080p no bigger resolutions so i guess that eliminates the cat leap monitors at least. I also stumbled across the following: NEC PA231w which looks pretty good, a 10 bit monitor as well incase I one day get a 10 bit camera. Thinking of getting the spyder express 4 to calibrate it half decent, as i'm low on cash at the moment (and for the forseeable moments in the future too!) Do you know if you can use mose monitors both in the UK and USA/CANADA, they're not country specific are they? (Except maybe the plugs but i guess i can always get an adapter).
