Editing juice for ex and general question

Hi, I am considering to go with the new pmw350, and so I need to sort out
the whole workflow before committing to a system. So please enlighten.
1. What is considered to be enough computing power for simple professional edit
of xdcam ex on final cut or premiere cs4? And what software is actually more suitable
for fast ex turn around? I've read the guides on sony site but need real info.
I am considering an I7 950 with 12gb ram, quadro1800 and two g-tech raids one in 0 for ingest and work in progress,
another in 1 or 5(more expensive) for archive or maybe just burn on blueray?
Is it good enough or do I need to go with faster raids/dual xeon (nehalem)?
2. Do you think its better to buy a nexto drive for offloading or just dump on the computer with a mini raid?
3. What are my options for monitoring (previewing) in edit? Can I go with blackmagic
intensity for previewing or do I need something else?
4. I also might get the nanoflash at some point, and will the same computer be suitable for that (50mbs)?
5.What are the other things to consider with going tapeless on EX?
I really appreciate your feedback. Thank you for your time and energy.
Camera will be used for softnews and docies for broadcast.

I have an EX-1.
I have a late 2008 MBP with expresscard slot.It is a 2.4GHZ Intel, with 4 gb of ram.
Works extremly well with FCP 7 and the XDcam Ex codec.
Media is stored on external HD's.
I am a Mac guy and use only Mac's.Can't say what a PC system needs.
Mine is a basic system and works well.
I use the expresscard slot to dump into my computer using clipbrowser with CRC checked.
Never had a failure. I also maKE an ARCHEIVE COPY OF THE BVAP FOLDER INTACT, as well as an optical DVD copy of the BVAP files.
I currently do not use an HD monitor, which i should really have.

Thank you for your input, Bob. That is extremely helpful as I don't want to spend more
than I have to. I had a feeling that salesmen were not completely true on specs needed
for XDCam editing. All I need is a nice flow in editing. By the way, how long does it take
to rewrap an hour of ex footage for edit in final cut?

i Thought one of the great things about final cut was that it was supposed to work natively with BPAV files no re wrapping was needed. THats the case with primier pro

From what I know Final has to rewrap the files to mov, unless you use some plugin.
Can someone tell what are the minimum requirements for fluid editing of XDcam EX?

editing XDCAM EX is very friendly in FCP. just as happy as Pro Rez is from what i have seen.

ive got the newest 8 core 2.93ghz (Nehalem) tripped out and it works great. my kid has my older 8 core 3.0ghz (clovertown) tripped out and i cant feel a difference between it and my newest mac. thats bullsh$t IMO!

i also have a MBP 2.16 core duo (not core 2 duo) with only 2 gigs of ram and it will run a single layer of XDCAM with smoothness. its not worth much more than that though. plus it would have limitation no matter XDCAM or Pro Rez HD. showing its age but i only use it for importing to not tie up my tower.

have a new Quad iMac 2.8ghz 8gigs with the 4850 on order and will have this month. this is for my other kid that does a lot of photoshop. i will put FCP on there as well. from what i have read it will easily match the Quad MP tower in performance. this is a smokin deal IMO. i wouldnt use it because i want the meanest and every edge but it should be smokin for somebody only wanting to spend a little over 2k. i dont think it can be beat.

so the macs are very easily friendly with XDCAM.

personally though i think apple is falling behind in performance (software). they are no way utilizing the multicore thingy. LAME, LAME, LAME!

i just saw a video demo with Adobe Premiere (cs5) running NATIVE AVCHD files with lots of layers and plugs playing smooth as silk. they have a new technology evidently **Mercury** that will capitalize on a Nvidia GPU (cant remember the model) for acceleration.

i have never used anyting but apple but im getting very discouraged with apple not keeping up with their LOUD claims of performance greatness. they are becoming the hype machine as i see it!!! SL has done virtually ***NOTHING****!!!!!!!!!!!

LAME.

i wont go PC but i will consider Premiere Pro in the future CS5 if apple doesnt move forward. i would suggest unless you are really hot on apple for it appealing OS that you look elsewhere...PC.
