editing/grading 1080/24p?

+Sandy Bridge Processor, USB 3.0, adequate RAM, Price...

-Slow HDD RPM, average Graphics card nothing to exciting about it (only 96 CUDA Cores).

My 3 year old Macbook Pro with 4GB RAM, Core 2 Duo 2.4GHz runs Premiere Pro and FCP just ok, slow but it gets the job done, After Effects it's another story, I am afraid to even open it. If I was you I would definitely add more RAM to it at least min 8GB now days it's cheap compared to few years ago and upgrade the HDD to 7200RPM and it should get the job done.

Well, this is 8GB RAM:

But isn't Mobile Intel® HD Graphics with 64MB-1696MB dynamically allocated shared graphics memory inferior?

This thread places an interesting point though...

Is that right? Can a 5400rpm speed disk be enough if only used for OS and NLE, I mean with the use of external 7200rpm disks?

Having edited on such a configuration for a while myself, yes, it's enough, although not ideal. Really it depends on what is acceptable to you. Scrubbing in the NLE and playing video, etc. will be fine, but the program itself won't be *quite* as fast. Unless you're a hardcore editor/computer nut you probably will never notice a difference.

Is this laptop suitable

No, it's a laptop.

What is it with people?

Why are you so desperate to pay over the odds for something?

I spend a good few minutes at least every week talking people out of buying a "laptop for editing". Buy a normal desktop computer and you'll get far more for your money. I spend another measurable amount of time explaining why buying a Macbook and plugging a firewire disk into it does not make it into a Quantel Pablo.

You are considering grading, and you're looking at a laptop? Is there some sort of circular I don't get called "how to buy absolutely the least suitable equipment possible?"

I am with you on that one. If you want to do Mickey Mouse work than a laptop would be ok, but for more serious work than a desktop would be the ideal tool. That's not to say that aren't any laptops out there that can perform and do the job very well, but then again why overpay for a laptop when a desktop with better hardware can do it for half the price. I guess the magic word is portability.

Sure, the magic word is portability. Thinking "we" know the reasons why someone asks for a laptop because our own experience is the same of the other people... is simply ridiculous.

If you work in different countries, flying away in a daily basis, what kind of luggage you'll bring with you for your.... desktop?!!

An advice to Phil up there, you should experiment Ryanair, unless you confound the English Channel with the sideral space... haha

Some people need to do mobile editing. For instance on a plane. A decent laptop can get the job done. You just have to spend the money on the right components. The graphics card probably being the most important thing.

yes zidane and mpgxsvcd, it is the case. I don't see my home since three years ago. Unfortunately, some people have no conditions for desktops.

And yet you have the conditions for grading?
No idea what level of grading you're thinking about. Color correcting, tweaking it. For your information for 35mm film-out included, more than once.

Could and should it be done in another way? Yes.
But, if not done in this way, the difference is between anything and nothing. I prefer the first one, whatever is.

Well yeah, sure, fine, I've made that point many times myself.

But bloody hell, a laptop?
but bloody hell, 1080/24p in a GH2 and not a Red One..?
yes, a laptop

Laptops are perfectly capable of editing and grading video if you buy smart... Some people need their stuff to be more portable...

Why are these things news to you guys?
