Editing GH13 footage

(Sorry I searched 3 pages of the Workflow forum and thoroughly on YouTube).

Importing hacked AVHCD footage into Final Cut Express 4 on an Intel iMac using Log and Transfer.
I opted not to go native on the hack by the way and I'm using Pal 25fps on the camera.

Works easily and perfectly, but the images look a bit electronic and cheap on the iMac screen in FCE, although creamy and high quality on the camera's viewer.
Have I imported it at a lower grade?
Should I still be using Cineform Neoscene to convert my GH13 footage, then importing it into FCE?

Edit: I see FCE4 imports using 'Apple Intermediate Codec' in LOg and Transfer.
The problem?
I tested Neoscene once before and it seemed to work fine in GH1 unhacked mode.
(I'm not dv veteran, I'm a musician trying to film)

Not when you are asking for confirmation, yeah even extra advice from people with much more experience.

What is ""a bit electronic ". Interlacing ? Banding ? etc... Check the ProRes 422 files in finder and see if they play okay in VLC. Make sure you 're using an external drive. Try transcoding in Neoscene if you have app.

Cheers

You said you opted not to go native 25p on the hack so that means your 25p footage is locked in a 50i stream,(non native). You must first remove pulldown to make it native for each shot before transcoding to a editing codec. Do a search for pulldown removal. if you did go native, which i suggest you do, log and transfer is all you need to do. The hack in native mode has a fail rate on high detail scenes like shooting grass. I have shot all types of things except grass and have had no fail rate.

Yeah, I tested it last night using the free version of Neoscene (watermarked) and it certainly looks as it should.
I'd already read the pull down topics a few weeks ago, I was just wondering if Neoscene (for a Mac) was still the way to go with hacked AVCHD (non native).
I'm familiar with large files and sometimes less than obvious conversion requirements in the world of music audio, just wanted to make sure i was heading in the right direction in terms of video, which is a subject I knew zero about before I bought the GH1.
Thanks.

OK. Sounds good.
Being my first attempt at the hack I wanted to go a little conservative. Just to get to first base so to speak.
Using the lpowell settings which so far have caused me zero difficulties.

camera viewer?

camera viewer?

What do you mean when you say it looks good on the camera viewer? Do you mean the LCD on the back of the camera? Because you can't really compare a business card sized display with seeing it pixel for pixel. It will always look more pixelated and electronic when viewed full screen on a progressive monitor because you're seeing the actual pixels. Shrink your viewer on your computer down to approximately the size of the camera's LCD to compare the two (but even then you're going to have different gamma, different color temperture, refresh rates, etc.). If I understood your question then you're trying to compare apples to oranges.

OK, that makes total sense.
The images certainly look best on my LCD at the moment, also the images on my iMac screen don't look as smooth as images others are posting here via YouTube and Vimeo.
Part of the problem is my basic filming technique.
I'm a complete newbie to video, video editing and Final Cut.
I'm working my way through Final Cut Express to finally get to edit some of my hacked footage.
I've used Neoscene to convert the AVCHD to ProRes HQ. Then I finally worked out I should set the 'sequence preset' in FCE to the same format. Except you can't. The presets are Apple intermediate codec or stuff like DVPal etc....
If I use presets like those and render my ProRes files to intermediate codec, am I degrading the hack footage quality to suit a budget film editing programme?
Does this mean I need to use FC Pro to get the best quality out of GH13 images?

OK

So, looks like I need FC Studio to work with ProRes 422 (HQ or LT)?

This is getting expensive. I don't have a proper tv monitor yet, just the iMac screen.
Shot some AVCHD today with my C Mount Kodak lens and it looks lovely though.

But do you need to remove any pulldown to obtain 25p from a 50i stream?
Do you, rather, need to deinterlace?

(50i is twice 25p - isn't it just frame doubling?)

Be carefull with the 25p clicked on, there are pulsing issues that you may or may not notice. I've seen the issues with 24p clicked on and have since clicked it off. It might be different for the 25p but I doubt it.
