GH2 Editing footage from hacked GH2 in Vegas Pro 11

OK, just upgraded (or so I thought) from a GH13 to a GH2 two weeks ago. Took the weekend to shoot a ton of footage using one of the driftwood hacks and the 14-140mm kit lens. On the surface the footage looks crisp and clean, but things started looking off when I started playing the clips individual via VLC player and WM Player.

There is far more jitter and jumpiness than from the GH13 and motion just looks off. I made sure I was shooting footage with correct shutter (am using a 24p hack), etc. I even went as far to try and transcode all my footage to AVi and Mov to see if one or the other imported or worked better in Vegas Pro. This is my first project with Vegas Pro 11, having recently upgraded from their Vegas Moviie Studio Premeire 11 and before that Vegas Pro 10... so I am not new to Vegas either.

My challenge is I am less than 20 days out from a family vacation that I promised to do a series of shorts films on and am getting nervous the I might have discovered an issue with the GH2 that will cause me grief later.

Of the maybe 2 hours of footage I have on a short weekend trip this past week, the only shots that are any good are static, which is not what you will normally get from a vacation video.

I'd like to know if on the surface anyone can steer me to possibly something simple I am doing wrong with the resources I have... if not I may not be left with much choice but to try and sell my GH2 along with a GF1 I have and try and get into another HDSLR, or worse yes I am considering a Sony VG20, or similar. Having come from standard video cameras in the past before the Gh1, I never really warmed to the DSLR form facter and while budget wise, I would almost need to sell the GH2, GF1 and my GH1 to afford it or comprable machine I might be better off, assuming Sony Cameras work with Sony software.

Any insight is appreciated.

I went back and looked at footage I shot with my GH13 prior to getting the GH2 and there is slighly more motion blur and noise than I remember or notice before, but it is useable where the Gh2 footage is barely watchable. I could get away with using the Gh13, but am already seeing the different in crispness and resolution between the two and hate to give up on the Gh2. Would a different hack be advisable. I can't remember the one specifically I used but it had what I thought was a fairly mild, 50-70mb/s speed which I had not error with any of the cards I used. Maybe I am still in the GH1 mindset, but I do not want to push it, especially if its the bit rate that is causing issues with Vegas and my computer.

The facts:

New install of Vegas Pro 11 on a newish PC running an INtel I7-2600k, 16GB Ram a pair of 560ti Video cards in SLi, Solid state HDD for the OS and programs. GH2 is running Driftwood hack, with 14-140 lense, F/50-125 used the entire time I shot. Auto Iso used mostly in 24H set on exposure mode in Menu as P.

If your footage looks good when played back in camera it's probably OK. Vegas will default to a lower resolution to give you a smooth playback. If it is set to a higher quality the playback will stutter and jerk. Your GH2 is putting out more data than the GH13 I'll bet. In Vegas above the monitor is a button named preview quality with settings from draft to best. Give that a look. Depending upon your setup a video player can look pretty bad even though the footage is good. just render a short clip in Vegas to a format like wmv or something and see how that works. I'm using Vegas 10 so I assume 11 is pretty much same-same.

Highly recommend shooting everything manual at 24P and 1/40th of second, with an I-FRAME only hack ( I've been using the older Quantum 100, which is a 100 Mbps I-Frame only hack ), and non-electronic lenses. ( the camera does image processing on the fly for many of the Lumix lenses, which I think is one of the causes for the jitter )

You will need to use high speed memory cards, like the Sandisk 64GB SDXC 95MB/sec cards. ( this is what I've standardized on, though I am looking at trying one of the new Patriot 64GB SDXC EP UHS-I cards when I can get my hands on one )

I'm still saving up to get a GH2, but why would you choose 1/40 shutter over 1/48, or does it not support 1/48? The rule is 180 degree shutter, right? So you double the frame rate to determine the shutter, that is, for a "filmic" look.

GH2 does 1/40 and 1/50 only. I often use 1/40 if I am using a Panny (over-sharpened) lens and I know there will not be a lot of fast subject movement to reveal any motion smear caused by the slower shutter.
On the GH2 a Panasonic lens will "create" motion jerkiness as a result of edge artifacts caused by the in-lens oversharpening. A Black Diffusion 3 filter and 1/40 shutter can rid you of this problem quite effectively.

I double checked and I am using one of the Quantum Hacks from Driftwood, not sure which one but when I run my footage through bitviewer I am averaging about 65-70mb/sec on my footage. I came to work early this morning to shoot some footage for comparison using both the kit lense and the 20mm F1.7 Panny I have but I forgot my charger and could only shoot new footage with the original hack since im required to have a fully charged battery to reflash. I had intended on installing a different hack and then doing an A-B comparison with each hack and each lens, but am unable to. Will have to try again this weekend.

I did take some of my footage from a trip out of town to my in-laws book store and compiled a video using the RAW .mts footage in a copy of Vegas Pro on my work computer. I immediately noticed two things while working with the .mts....

The first was that the import of .MTS was much quicker and smoother than the .avi files, .mov files would not import for me. The second is that at no point did my copy of Vegas crash on the .mts files, but it did as soon as I tried to work with the .avi files.

The above is sort of good news since my work computer is a older Dell Vostro running an Intel Core 2 Duo E7400 and 4Gb ram. My home machine as mentioned before is a beast and I suspect I need to do a complete reinstall and format of my drives and start over to clean out all the junk from six months worth of test programs, games and a previous version of Vegas 10 and Vegas Movie Studio 11. I am not looking forward to that...

Anyway, I will post the video link once it is up, but due to not having a premium Vimeo account it will be converted to 720p and I am unsure if it will show the motion issues I am having. The file that I rendered from Vegas is a 40GB mp4 which when I watch it, there is a lot of motion blur, more than should be considering I used a 1/80 speed on most footage. I might need to play with my camera more and do a reflash back to stock GH2 and test it as well.

My big challenge is I have gotten use to the footage from the GH13 and maybe am not familiar with the DSP as was mentioned above that the GH2 applies and need to find a way to compensate in my footage.

Bottom, line for me is I fear I am stuck either working through this, or going back to the GH13 for my vacation for I do not have time to sell my rig and buy a new camera and learn it before we leave. This is why I started experimenting a month out....
