Editing DVCproHD - any updates?

But your arguments do not logically lead to a fault on the side of the software manufacturers.
Why not? They're the ones who make the software, and Avid and FCP and EDIUS have all implemented support. Who, other than Adobe and Vegas, should we point the finger at?

I have no insight on whats going on behind the scenes there - have you?
Adobe says they're counting on the Matrox solution. Vegas won't say anything, although RayLight kind of got them off the hook, but you can't discount that Vegas is owned by Sony.

Avid has a lot of support, FCP supports every mode in the US version.

Nobody has PAL support (except for EDIUS, again) for the 720p mode, but Avid and FCP and EDIUS all support 1080 mode.

So we could also ask why, if Panasonic is doing their best to help editing software manufacturers implement their format, only Edius fully supports it so far?
Obviously it's a matter of priorities, isn't it? Why not ask the software manufacturers what their priorities are, and when they'll get to it?

Why would eg Apple NOT want to be able to edit every professional format that´s out there?
Again, ask them about JVC HDV -- one year and counting. Or Canon 24F/30F -- 9 months and counting.

It's the software manufacturers who are dragging their feet.

Now, about Apple -- what is it, with your HVX, that you want to do that you can't do on Apple? It supports every mode of the US HVX. And 1080 mode of the EU HVX. Only thing it doesn't have is 720/25p mode, and you can get P2 Log to support that. So where's the problem with FCP?

If Edius will be the only way to edit footage from our camera, this would mean our two editing stations (1 Mac/FCP, 1 PC/PP2) will become redundant.
So nag the software manufacturers to support it. FCP already does, but Premiere appears to be the problem.

Or, just bite the bullet and get RayLight or CineForm. After spending $10,000 on a camera, spending an additional $200 to actually be able to work with it doesn't seem that outrageous.

Buying Edius or buying CineForm - both investments, I actually don´t want to make. And I don´t like being forced to spend money on things I never wanted.
Agreed. But, as they say in Apocalypse Now: "There's the way things is, and the way things ought to be." All you can work with is where you are now, with what's available now. And with what's available now you can work on FCP, EDIUS, Avid, Premiere/Raylight, Vegas/RayLight, or with just about any app on CineForm.

Not sure what you mean. EDIUS Broadcast 4.0 supports just about every format from just about every camera. It supports everything a US HVX can do, everything a PAL HVX can do, everything the VariCam and the XDCAM-HD and JVC and Canon cameras do... EDIUS is probably the most format-aware NLE on the market.

Poor wording on my part. I meant that EDIUS Broadcast 4.0 isn't released yet. So my question is, does Broadcast 3.x support the hvx?

Donald,

you are fortunatly wrong on this, it IS released already!
Only thing that we cant get is the broadcast trial and broadcast drivers for the canopus NX card.

thanks for the link, I bought it directly from Canopus for $999, now I'll probably find other places that I could of saved money at :) oh well

I talked to the Adobe video products manager today and ask why there was no full DVCproHD support.
He really diddn`t know.
I asked if there´d be an update anytime soon.
He didn´t think so.
He only said the next PP will probably have it, but that is still more than a year away.
I guess the 200$ CineForm or Raylight option is the way to go atm, as Barry stated...

Could someone please explain to me why i keep hearing people claim that Avid doesn't work with the MXFs. For the billionth time, it does. It's been using MXFs for quite a while. All you have to do is move them into your Avid Media folder and import them with the media tool. That's it. Not converting. No duplicates. It also works fine with Native mode. You can even edit stait from the P2 if you like since Avid will automatically detect it when it's plugged in. Please, someone explain to me why I keep hearing people whine about a lack of Avid support. The only irritation I've noticed is that the colors tend to be much brighter when exporting H264. That's about it.

Editing MXF Files

You can edit MXF files in Avid Xpress Pro HD. I have found the process quite simple. The HVX is a God send for a small production house.

Not that I need the update, as I have barely touched the possibilities of Edius Broadcas v3, but how much would an update cost me, from Broadcast v3 to v4? No way to just get it as a download?

Edit: I just saw, that you are eligible for a free upgrade, if you have bought it on April 1st, 2006, or later. And as I have bought my version from CostUpdate on Ebay brand new on April 1st, 2006...I have e-mailed the vendor, if he can get the free upgrade for me.

The problems with Avid are, near as I can tell:
no 720/25p or 720/50p support
No support for 1080/24p on a 24p timeline (has to be edited on a 60i timeline)
No support for 720/24p (not PN) on a 24p timeline (i.e., no frame rate extraction)
No support for 720/30p on a 30p timeline
No support for 480/30p DVCPRO50 at all
No support for 480/24p DVCPRO50 or DVCPRO50 on a 24p timeline
No support for DVCPRO25 at all
No support for DV/24p or 30p from P2 on a 24p timeline at all, only from tape

So yeah, that's pretty limited. If all you're working with is 720pN or 1080/60i, Avid's fine. But it's far from being as robust as EDIUS or FCP, for example.

Note, this is all based on the February Avid HVX support doc, http://www.avid.com/content/9082/HVX200Support14.doc

If there's another/more updated document, perhaps that will point to an improved situation.

I depends on when you bought V3 -- you may be eligible for a free update. If you got V3 after April 1st 2006, the upgrade is free. If you bought it before then, the upgrade to Edius Broadcast V4 is US$ 499; I'm not sure how many Euros the European office charges.

I paid CHF 319 incl. VAT (ca. US$245) - I wonder if US customers really have to pay US$499.

It's $199 if you upgrade to Edius Pro V4, but the upgrade to the Edius Broadcast V4 is $499.

Interesting, I'll have to try some of these things out becaus some just seem odd. Correct me if I'm wrong though but doesn't FCP need to convert any MXF first before you can use it? I would think that alone would make it less robust than Avid.

Agreed. I'm not thrilled with the Apple approach of having to convert files, but at least I know, using FCP, that 1080/24pA is going to work. With Avid you can't even put it on a 24p timeline. You can only edit it as 60i.
